computer wont shut down

Microsoft Windows xp professional w/serv...
September 1, 2009 at 02:25:05
Specs: Windows XP Pro, SP 3, Intel(R), Pentium(R)M, 512 MB
My two year old lap top was running fine until I got infected through a storage dongle. Every time I turn my comp on the following notice comes up:
Windows cannot find 'C:\WINDOWS\winlogon.exe.' Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, Click the Start button, and then click Search.

I can go past that warning but many of the programs like Thunderbird and internet browsers, both FF and IE, freeze up. Also I keep getting warning that my computer's virtual memory has run out of space.
Worse, when I shut down my laptop, the icons disappear but the wallpaper remains until I physically turn off the machine.

I have run Hijack this and the log is below:

winlogon.exe directory shoud be C:\windows\system32
you sure that is says C:\windows\winlogon.exe ?

abot virtual memory...right click on my computer >> properties >>Advanced tab >> click on first settings button >>advanced tab >> change button in the lower part of the window >> in "custom size text" boxes write "1536" and click on the "set" button
then click ok on every button and restart...

about shutdown...
go to device manager >> expand computer tab and post me the items (there should be ACPI or Standard PC)

post me back...

winlogon in c:\windows folder is the "bad puppy"
winlogon in the c:\windows\system32 is the good one

winlogon in c:\windows has probably been removed although it is still in the startup sequence.

go to start - run and type: msconfig
go to tab "startup" and check for winlogon.exe in c:\winlogon (in command column)
unselect this line

number one, when people post a HJT log without a request in this forum, the REGULAR helpers ignore the post and some of them flag it as offensive.

I noticed lately that the newbies don't really know the rules.

There is a pop-up that appears when you post a HJT log, the newbies just ignore the warning and post anyways and then the newbie members tend to answer the post.

Some HELP in posting on plus free progs and instructions Cheers
