Computer won't boot without Avira GmbH disc

Asus / P4r800-v deluxe
August 24, 2010 at 11:06:54
Specs: Microsoft Windows XP Professional, 2.405 GHz / 1470 MB
After downloading Avira GmbH anti-virus program I made a cd copy. After removing the software, and exiting, I tried to re boot, and got the message 'insert Avira startup disc.'
I can no longer start my computer as before, but have to have the Avira disc inserted so that I am forced to choose: "1-- start Avira; or 2 -- boot from first available hard drive."
I must choose "2" everytime I restart, or after shutdown and try to start again.

The Avira.com websight gives no help. I may have to write the software company in Germany. Any help, or suggestions? Thank you.

uninstall Avira and maybe try Avast Free...much better in my opinion
OR
go into your bios and set up the boot order to ALWAYS boot from the hard drive.

Thank you XpUser4Real, for your reply.

As you suggested, I did set my BIOS to boot from the hardrive, but to no avail. I still get the message, "insert system disc and press enter."
Then I set Bios to bypass the cdrom, of course it wouldn't boot at all. Just a black screen staring at me. I restarted, enterend BIOS again and had to reset to recognize cdrom as 2nd choice.

I went to control panel to delete programs. I cannot find "Avira" anywhere in my "delete programs." Nor on the hardrive. I'm having a hard time finding a solution, but I sure appreciate your help.

have you tapped f8 and gone into safe mode? See if that loads up. If it does, go into msconfig/startup programs and uncheck everything in there and reboot, see if it loads properly.

Thank you XpUser4Real , I had earlier disabled about 1/2 the items in startup, and this time as you suggested, I disabled all items in startup... no, it didn't help either. I still have to insert the Avira disc.

I have found an email address for Avira in Germany, and am awaiting some kind of solution from them. I'm unable to type in German, but I think they'll understand. ha.

Thank you again for being so helpful.
