I've been having some problems with my computer lately and it has been getting intolerable to ignore. I have downloaded AVG anti-spyware, Spybot, and CCleaner. When i run the AVG anti-spyware a couple of malware and spyware are included on the list, but something called Smit-something is always there. I can not get rid of it even with a reboot. Ultimate Defender is on my taskbar and keeps popping up with messages. And a couple days back this popup that looked exactly like the MS update came from my desktop to download SP3, I thought it was real so I pressed download, but nothing happened. Please help me with my problem. I have also have been having these computer hangs/lags.

Hi Alex

Is the Smit-something by any chance
smit-fraud-c?

what www.411-spyware-remove.com says:

SmitFraud may issue fake security warnings.
Rogue Anti-Spyware applications use a number of methods to secure a purchase. Once embedded into your computer the application will attempt to get you to buy through the intentional use of false positives, as well as through misleading popups and "system alerts," claiming that your computer is infected with spyware.

Trojan artificial warning methods:

Windows look-a-like balloon prompting from your system tray
Popup window warning you that Spyware has been detected
You may find that your desktop has been hijacked and replaced with a false warning message
Your internet browser home page maybe hijacked and switched with a security warning page.
SmitFraud may use one or more of these methods attempting to scare and trick you into purchasing.

What www.spywareremove.com says:

Smitfraud is a trojan, which shows excessive pop-up messages showing a false alert or fake error message, trying to lure computer user into purchasing anti-spyware software, such as AdwareDelete, PSGuard, AntivirusGold or SpySheriff, that supposedly detects adware on your computer but in turn is a malicious spying software. Furthermore, Smitfraud replaces some Windows critical components with own infected files. Smitfraud is a malicious spyware and may cause serious system instability issues. It's recommended that you get rid of this trojan as soon as possible.

Ultimate defender also appears to be a rogue antispyware / security tool.

There are a number of removal methods and tools available online if this is what the infection is. Please research each method / tool thoroughly and see what other computing.net posts say about smitfraud

I hope this is helpful

Yes, it is smit-fraud. I have searched another post exactly like my problem, but an expert told him exactly what to do. I dont feel that comfortable reviewing my Hijackthis. If anyone will assist me, please reply. As for the other methods. I have tried them all.

I will help you analyse your hijackthis log if you post it. I must say though cleaning your system with hijackthis is not always a be all and end all. This seems like a particularly aggresive piece of malware. Can I ask what Antivirus and firewall programs you use also? Do you have spyware / adware applications installed?

Hi Alex

I've researched your hijackthis log and found a few lines that are of concern

C:\WINDOWS\system32\scchk32.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SC2] C:\WINDOWS\system32\scchk32.exe
O23 - Service: Net Agent - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\dls0523pmw.exe (file missing)

Also these BHO's (Browser Helper Objects) are a concern but we will deal with those second.

Before we make any adjustments with hijackthis I'll get you to download SUPERAntiSpyware from here:

http://www.snapfiles.com/opinions/S...

Instal it and perform all the updates. After it is installed boot into safe mode and run the program. Perform a "complete scan". This will take a while as it thoroughly scans your memory, registry and c: drive. After scan is finished quarantine selections, reboot your pc normally and run another hijackthis log

That Hijackthis log post looks alot cleaner. The last line concerns me

C:\WINDOWS\dls0523pmw.exe (file missing)

and the unnamed BHO's. We'll look after the last line in the hijackthis log first then we'll sort out the BHO's

Click Start > run and enter. In the box put

sc delete Net Agent

(you can copy and paste this line in if you wish)

Reboot and post new hijackthis log

Can you right click on your connection icon in the system tray > "open network connections" then right click on the icon you are connected to the internet with... click "properties" > click "internet protocol (tcp / ip) > click "properties".

Is "obtain ip address automatically" and "obtain dns server address automatically" selected?

If they are we will continue. We will make a folder on the c: drive for your hijackthis program... this is it will store backups of the changes we are about to make.

Important: Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C:
"show hidden files...." if you get the blue screen, then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT.

Cut and paste your hijackthis file into here.

Run Hijackthis from the new location and "do a system scan only". Tick and "fix checked" on the following items at the bottom of the page. Click "yes" when promted after you close all internet exporer windows. After hijackthis has finished... click start > run and put in this text (without quotes) "sc delete Net Agent" then hit enter

Reboot and post hijackthis log

Fix these items:

Very nice.... All the offending lines seem to have been removed. Next we will instal an antivirus program that will do a boot-time scan. This will scan the pc while it boots up (before any programs are loaded). Have you had any antivirus programs installed on it in the past, or one thats maybe out of date?

I dont think so. I have AVG Antispyware, Spybot, CCleaner, and now SuperAntiSpyware. They are all up to date.

Can you open ccleaner and "run cleaner". Once that has finished can you click on the "tools" option, you should have a list there headlined "uninstall". Click the "save text to file" button and save this file to desktop. Then go to your desktop and find the saved file open and copy the log into this post.

Thats excellent... No need to remove any old anti-virus progs. Go to this link:

http://www.avast.com/eng/download-a...

This is a very good free antivirus program. Once it is downloaded, install it. At a later stage you will have to register it for free if you want to keep it. Once it is completely installed, if I remember rightly, it will ask you if you want to schedule a boot-time scan. Click yes and the pc will reboot. You should see avast scanning your pc while it is booting up, let it run through this process and if it detects any infections delete them

By the way, do you know of any free firewalls or protectors? Its a drag using these manual scans. If not can I erase some of the ones I have to clear up space?

Yeah... definitely. I use Avast myself for AV it updates itself and I use it for screen saver so it scans whenever i'm not using my pc. Also I use zonealarm For my firewall. Both of these are really good award winning programs and are free. I use ccleaner to run on start-up (delays startup by about 30 secs). So every time I start up my pc it cleans all my cache files. And the malware / spyware / adware programs I use are adaware and spybot. I update and run these probably about once a week. They're free too. And if you want to keep SUPERantispyware it wouldn't hurt.

For me, the ones I have are Avast, Zonealarm, Spybot, Adaware and ccleaner. But it's really up to personal preference.

But the big guns are defenitely the antivirus and firewall programs. They simply are a must have. I hope this helps

Where can I get the Zonealarm? It looks like you have to buy it to get it. And how did you make your avast run auto?

Excellent, Your hijackthis log has given your pc a clean bill of health. Did your avast boot-time scan run well?... sorry I meant to tell you it takes a while. Last thing I would do now is all my ms updates.

Avast does all the av defenitions automatically so you don't need to worry about that. When a program update is available it will prompt you with a green box. The way you can set Avast to scan your pc automatically is to set it as your scren saver while you're not using your pc. It will already be in your screen saver options. It pays to launch it manually every so often though so you can do a thorough scan of your hard drive(s). One last thing I do myself is merge the 2 avast icons in the system tray to make it look less cluttered. Right click icon in system tray > merge.

Zonealarm:

The firewall is on the far right column, this is all you will need as you have the other security measures.

You will find that you will have to "train" the firewall... unfortunately this is the nature of the beast. You will get alerted with popups of programs that want access to the net after you install it. If you trust the program (e.g. Avast wants access to the net: Allow / Deny) allow it and remember to tick the "remember this setting" box. Over time these popups will disappear and you will get them only when you install new applications / or they update... or if some nasty managed to get through the defences and wants access to the net(which you would deny).

You will also get alerts of hacking attempts which the firewall blocks. The pop-up will give you the option of turning these off when ever you want.

As a matter of preference I find that ZA has many issues, so I have been using Comodo Pro which is also free and it does a great job.

Oh, and by the way btk1w1, I'm glad someone else believes in the Avast boot up scan...I've been pushing that for some time now.

Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks
