Computer turns off on start up

December 4, 2005 at 14:21:31
Specs: Windows XP, AMD Turin, 1gb of ram

Everytime i start my computer ot gets to the windows xp starting up bit before all the users come on and just freezes, some times it just turns off before then.
Managed to get into safe mode once to try and fix it with a system restore, but it couldnt log in again and turnd off.
Now i cant even get into safe mode and some times the computer just turns off before i get the choice!
Anyone have any idea whats wrong with it? what sort of virus i have?
Any sort of remedy?

You may be looking at some kind of hardware problem rather than a virus. It sounds as if your CPU could be overheating. If you cant get into windows then you could try a DOS based virus checker and a boot disk but honestly I would just reinstall windows, because all you need for it is an XP install disc and you wont need another PC.

Just choose a different folder when prompted so as not to overwrite your old installation.

If reinstalling windows doesnt work then it is almost certainly a hardware problem, most likeley HDD or CPU.

Thanks, i currently dont have my reinstall disk, but i will try tomorow.
Some technicians at work put it in a thing called "soak" and all the hardware is fine (sorry for being a bit ill informed).
Im pretty sure its a virus as my friend has had the same thing after downloading a dodgy programe last week, same symptons.
Will i lose all my work on a restart though? or is there a way around that
Thanks
