Hello, I am trying to fix a friend's computer. There was some spyware and malware on the computer, which I have started using a number of different programs. However, I feel that there are also viruses, and I do not know how to get rid of them.

Every time I try to run an anti-virus program, either on my computer (McAfee, I think it's corrupted) or online (TrendMicro, Kaspersky), in normal or safe mode, the computer automatically shuts off without any warning.

The only "virus" that it ever finds is the hijack-this program that I have downloaded to try to figure out the problem. I do have the last available log, and could download the program and run it again in safe mode, if it is helpful.

Please help me!

Thank you,

Patrick

Hi Patrick,

Sounds like it's too clabbered up to make cleanup worth the hassle.

I would save the data, wipe the drive and start over.

If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.

I would suggest you to make windows restore first. it is less painful.. You will always have a chance to wipe the drive and start over.

try this
step 1: start < run < msconfig < [tab]general
< selective startup < uncheck all items
step 2:
start < [r-click] my computer < [tab]system restore < [select] disable system restore
step 3:
system properties < advanced < startup and recovery < [uncheck] automatic restart
step 4:
start < run < cmd < chkdsk /r
restart the computer
then run virus scanning
