computer screen has a cascade effect

Hewlett-packard Compaq dc5100 desktop

Specs: Windows XP, pinel pentium 4ht/ unsure
My screen had a cascading effect on Internet Explorer and when I clicked the "start" button. I couldn't get the tools icon to let me delete the browser memory, The "Cancel" button was the only button that would activate. I couldn't get the Microsoft Security Essentials(MSE) Icon to uncover on the bottom right of my screen. I had three windows open and whatever window I went to the screen scrolled by itself to the bottom of the screen. When I tried to scroll up it kept dropping back down. When I went to my screen saver and tried to click the Internet Explorer shortcut icon the icon at the bottom, of the column of icons, would activate. Finally I turned the computer off, after much waiting for each step to be completed. When I turned it back on everything seemed to work alright. My question is was this caused by a virus that MSE missed, or an overload of the memory or something else in the hardware?

Sounds like typical windows behavior. Windows needs to be restarted regularly to work properly.

Thanks I appreciate the information. It has been sometime since it was restarted. Good to know it's not some virus consuming everything.
