I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop from a few years ago running Windows XP.
Yesterday, I was on a website when I noticed a lot of Internet Explorer popups. I use Mozilla Firefox, so I just left the site, not wanting to deal with the popups.
I ran a MalwareBytes Anti-Malware scan last night, just to be sure. Everything seemed okay. I got on today and everything seemed to be fine until I started getting boxes asking me about leaving a secure area through Internet Explorer, "Do you want to continue?"
I ran an AVG virus scan then. It came up with 17 different things and required a restart. I restarted the computer and entered my password, it flashed my desktop screen before saying it was logging off and saving my settings. It keeps doing this.
I ALREADY tried starting in safe mode to run the anti-virus again and it would not allow me to log in that way either.
Any help is appreciated!
P.S. I would like to keep as much if not everything on the hard drive.

... try tapping "F8" key @ boot-up select "safe mode" a pop-up should appear prompting you to "system restore"
... in system restore select a calendar date to when the pc was working fine
Grrrr
"...pentathol makes you sing like a canary"
... got brain freeze
