My computer is acting very strangely (symptoms below). It was doing this 2 weeks ago and Symantec Antivirus detected and removed several Trojans, including a keystroke recording virus, and a password stealing one. I ran an updated version of ad aware and then the computer worked fine.

This morning I turned it on and it was going the same thing. Since I couldn't connect to the internet to update my virus definitions, I tried restoring the registry. It took 5 tries as it was failing each time. Finally it worked. I updated the virus software and ran it, but it didn't catch anything. The computer is working ok but I'm afraid of this happening again. Does anyone have suggestions?

Here are the symptoms:

When I start the computer, it starts slowly, and then the cursor flashes rapidly between the pointer and the hourglass. Internet is disabled.

When I load safe mode, the screen is split and the bottom of the screen loads on top, so that when i bring the cursor down to the bottom, it reappears the top of the screen.

Scanreg/restore wouldn't work until the 5th time I attempted to run it.

If I boot in Command prompt mode the "\" key appears as #.

You might have a trojan or virus which Symantec missed. The online scans linked below may be helpful.
