Hi everybody,

i'm interesting in computer and internet security.(Antivirus, Antispyware etc.)

People said that internet is not secure.
Therefore, i decide to have an antivirus, antispyware. And now i have it. I am using "Norton" as antivirus, and "ad-aware", "spybot search and destroy" as anti-spyware.

Am i now completly protect and safe for the internet world?

I'm using a 56k modem, so i don't know if it is necessary to have a firewall...
Also can adaware 6.0 Pro can replace a firewall?

Thanks

First, there is no such thing as complete Internet security, unless you UNPLUG your PC and never allow it to connect to the Internet.

And PC security is not a "one-time thing"
to be done and then forgotten.

A software firewall like ZONE ALARM is necessary in addition to regular updates to Norton AV and AD AWARE and SPYBOT.

Also, you must understand what the SETTINGS do on INTERNET EXPLORER (your Web browser) and if you have XP PRO you must understnad which SERVICES to DISABLE.

Also, you should have a PORT VIEWER like
ACTIVE PORTS (www.webattack.com)
so as to minotor what processes are using which port and when.

AdAware cant replace firewall. Its just another spyware cruncher...and I think its one of the best.
Norton antivirus is like its name, just an antivirus. It protects ur system from infection aóf virus (worms, etc)

On the other hand, Firewall is a tool to protect ur system from attacker unallowed attacker from outsider (net, etc).

So they are fully different tools.

thanks everyone,

but i am using a modem, do i need to use firewall? Does hackers interest in slow connection(Modem)???

If i do, which free firewall is good, and the most important thing is EASY to use.

i remember that two years ago, i had a firewall(i forgot the name) it is super hard to use, cuz it keep asking me hi-tech complicate questions while i surf the net, and i don't know how to answer....so i delete it.....

The question of what firewall to use is debatable. Different people have different needs and preferences. I like Zone Alarm. Sygate is a favorite of many on this forum. You can do a search of this forum for "best firewall" or something similar and find old threads where the pros and cons of each are discussed.

I forgot one thing - yes, you should have a firewall even if you use a dial-up modem connection. One thing the firewall does, besides protecting you from incoming attacks, is it prevents anything on your computer from contacting the interent, unless you give it permission. For example, if you had a trojan on your computer it would be trying to contact something on the internet all the time. The firewall will alert you to that so you can stop it and identify the program, process or whatever is trying to call out.

Tiny is one of the best to use BUT not the easiest one. For the beginner, i think, its a little bit too complicated. Unless you know what UDP, TCP, ICMP, etc than, just try ZoneAlarm or Sygate.

Actually a Firewall is not necessary with most Dial-up lines if you configure your system correctly and don't have open ports or share drives. Go to GRC.com and run Shields UP tests. Read about security there and try to follow advice on closing your ports.. You should do this first so that all your ports are closed "before" you install a Firewall if you really feel one is necessary.

Given that a good firewall like ZONE ALARM is FREE, there's NO reason not to use it.
Yes, a properly locked box is good, but it does NOT mean you do not need a firewall, even for dial-up.
The ZONE ALARM will perform best at alerting you to ANY programs that try to connect to the WEB behind your back, without which you would not know of, without a firewall.
Besides, the idea of PC secuirty is to secure your PC as best as possible, meaning redundency is the rule, so if one system fails, another will hopefully catch the
danger.
Don't be fooled by thinking your PC holds no valuable data that any one wants, unprotect yourself and see how fun reformatting and reloading WINDOWS is.
