I found this interesting about the new ZoneAlarm Pro which will be released late summer or early fall 2004), will also warn if your antivirus protection is compromised.
Read about it here,

Lets hope it works better than their latest version 5. It was supposed to monitor your antivirus program's status (updated and monitoring). It was a disaster for many users. Zone Labs, through their forum, had to provide a link so that people could uninstall 5 and go back to the previous version 4.5 that had been upgraded.

Agreed. 5 is the worst piece of software I've seen in a long time, got to the point I will not recommend ZoneAlarm (no point if the malware just disables it)

Yes I hope so too, this will be really nice to have something to monitor such a needed program.
I was lucky I guess. I had recieved the alert for the new update, but being it was late and I was heading to bed, I decided to wait till morning to update mine. That was a good thing. So the next morning I just so happen to come here first and I saw a lot of people with problems with it. So I decided to wait till I heard some better news about ZoneAlarm before updating it. I am still waiting, lol.

Hello all; I am running Zone Alarm version 4.5, and have had no problems at all with it for quite some time.
I'm definitely staying away from version 5.0, though.
Enjoy your Wednesday, all.

IMHO, the problem with new versions of a lot of software is companies' attempts to make their software multi-purpose. I think if they would just leave a program in its own niche, and write a new program to expand into different fields, everyone would be better off.

There are kernel drivers running these features - often the user process has administrative privelege. This means bugs operate/corrupt with high level priveleges. All applications have bugs, new and old. This only complicates the stability of the system. Stability is paramount to security. Zone Alarm understands that a full featured firewall is on the horizon for Windows and it has to add more features.
And why is the firewall checking the anti-virus? Why would the rogue process not simply disable the firewall - if the rogue process has admin priveleges (very likely), then it can execute normal instructions anyway (no need for virus/worm behavior).
This is the backwards approach - Windows users shouldn't need to do any normal tasks with admin priveleges (like web browsing). That's poor design by Microsoft. No user process should be able to hijack or alter the antivirus process because general applications and things that come off the Internet should be running with lower priveleges.

Ya, its a very good step towards better security but as a 100% security can never be achieved and like zone alarm may also be infected. As its one of the most famous firewalls, crackers can easily find the wholes and then abuse them. Even mocrosoft with thousands of programmers and IT experts have not yet able to produce a single secure product, how can zonealarm claims to produce a software that can block all the flow of irrelevant information on the network. There are already many cracks available for zonealarm and hackers still abuse them.Still, its a very good step and i axpect a lot more from Zonealarm as its also one of my favourite firewall. Lets hope to have a 100% secure network. :)
