CD ROM will not work at all

November 10, 2009 at 19:20:36
Specs: Windows XP
I have a computer that got infected with a pretty nasy virus. After running AVG on it and going through and deleting any viruses I could find that AVG didn't catch it still showed as infected. So I decided to try and format the computer and re-install Windows XP. But the CD ROM drive will now not work. I try to press the button to open the cd drive on the computer but it doesn't open it up, even when pressing it while the computer is booting. I was able to get the Windows XP boot disc in the computer by manually opening the drive but it doesn't read the CD. Any help is appreciated.

Is the drive listed in the bios when you enter the bios? Is the drive selected as boot first from it, instead of the hard drive first? Be sure to enter the bios during the xp installation to select boot from hard drive first so that you do not keep installing from the cd.

It comes up in my BIOS and shows that it is installed, it even shows it being initialized when the computer gets booted up. And yeah, I have the CD-ROM drive set up as the first drive to boot from but it doesn't give me the option to boot from the CD, it just goes straight to loading the OS.

Here are some procedures u can try
1- change bios settings to default

2- Make sure u know the name & model of the drive

3- see inside the pc to make sure none of the wires have come loose that connect to the drive

4- if u can open the drive ,place a dvd into it ,then go into my computer to see if it is listed

5 - make sure u have the software driver installed for that drive

6 - If u have Nero burning installed , it will tell u the name of the drive
