n I place my mouse arrow over the Start Button or Taskbar it changes to an hour glass. Clicking has no effect so I won't be able to use these objects to troubleshoot. Also, my wireless connection which begins at start up and anything else that should be on the system tray does not display and does not start (except the clock). As a result, I have no internet access. Repeated rebooting did not solve the probelm.

Is this a virus or did something in XP get corrupted?

Please help!

Thanks in advance.

Try repairing XP, here's how:

Configure your computer to start from the CD-ROM drive. For more information about how to do this, please refer to your computer's documentation or contact your computer manufacturer.

Insert your Windows XP compact disc (CD) into your CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer.

(You can also boot with a Windows 98/Me Startup disk with CD support and run WINNT.exe in the I386 folder on the CD)

When the "Press any key to boot from CD" message is displayed on your screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.

When you see the following message displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen, press ENTER:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

At this point an option to press R to enter the Recovery Console is displayed. Do not select this option.

On the Windows XP Licensing Agreement screen, press F8 to agree to the license agreement.

Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the box, and then press the R key to repair Windows XP.

Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Setup.

I've got an HP Pavilion. I went into the machine's setup menu and changed the boot order to go to the cd-rom first. Put the XP cd in the drive, did a save and exit but it still boots up from the harddrive first. Guess I contact HP.

Anyway, sound like you recommendation will work...thanks very much.

Try going to Start, Control Panel, Network Connections. Then look for your dsl icon and right click on it. Choose properties and look for a check box which allows the dsl icon to to show in the notification area when connected.

-lol.

I'm surprised no one suggested starting up in safe mode...
Try starting up in safe mode and see if it does the same thing. If it doesn't, go into your msconfig startup list (start->run->msconfig). Uncheck everything and restart - if that doesn't help, post back.

Did the msconfig and unchecking, restarted but the problem still exists. Noticed cpu performance showing 100% in Task Mgr.

Go into task manager, click processes, and tell us the name of the process that's taking up 100% of your CPU.
If it's explorer, then it's probably a virus.

You're right, it's Explorer.

Unfortunately, I'm prevented from connecting to the internet so I could download the latest virus updates...

I have one thing going for me that may help me trouble-shoot. I can right click on the desktop Recycle Bin (remember the start btn and task bar are useless) and get into Explorer from there. From the windows folder I can execute regedit. I just don't know what to look for and remove once I'm in the registry???

Neither do we - it could be a dillion different things.
Here are my thoughts (it would be best, if possible, to run your computer in 'safe mode with networking' during all of these):
1. Internet Explorer is integrated into Windows Explorer. Therefore, you should be able to access the internet from the recycle bin ;)
2. If you DO have internet access, try updating your antivirus (if it's not running already, you could find it via explorer)
3. If you do have internet access, but your Anti-virus won't update, check your hosts file. The hosts file is located in %WINDIR%\system32\drivers\etc\. It's named simply "hosts", and should be opened in notepad. Delete every entry except for the one that looks like "127.0.0.1 localhost". Lines that start with # are simply comments, and don't need to be deleted.
4. If THAT doesn't work, you could always run system restore by running msinfo32.exe (\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\MSInfo\). It's under the tools menu.
5. If you have another computer (which I'm assuming you do, since you're typing to us now), or have a friend who has an available computer, try installing your antivirus program on that computer. See if it has an option to boot into DOS from a floppy and run an updated virus check (I believe Norton does, don't know about others...). If it does, make one of those (for Norton I remember it taking 7 floppies O_o) and start up the broken computer with that.
6. Worst come to worst, you may just have to repair or even reinstall Windows XP. You said that for some reason the Bios wouldn't change the boot order - have you tried booting with a bootable floppy? (unless, of course, your computer doesn't have a floppy drive...)

I just wondered if you ever tried putting your antivirus software in your cd drive and changed your first boot device to cdrom, i've done that before with norton and gotten rid of troublsome viruses
