I have tried to dial up with many ISPs. My modem can connect to the internet. The internet status is like this http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g168/alisa815/Dial.jpg
The “Sent” and “Received” works fine.
However, I cannot connect to the web site or MSN. I cannot even use Outlook to send and receive mail. Please see http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g168/alisa815/MSN1.jpg and http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g168/alisa815/web.jpg.
I already TURN OFF the firewall. However, it does not work.
I ran IPCONFIG. The result said MEDIA DISCONNECTED. Please see http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g168/alisa815/IPconfig.jpg
Also, I test my modem using HELP command in my Windows XP, the result is http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g168/alisa815/TestModem.jpg You can see that there are some FAIL.
I think that the problem occurred after Norton Systemworks ran Live Update and I tried to stop the process. I do not know whether during that time, Norton sent any Virus or program to lock my system or not. However, I already used Symantec Removal Utility to remove all the program. I then scanned the Virus but did not find one.
Please help if you can. With great thanks in advance.

It sounds like your computer is stuffing up majorly. But I've got a solution and a suggestion. My solution is that you format and re-install your OS onto your computer. This should get rid of the virus/es. My suggestion to you is that you don't use Norton Anti-virus software because I used to use it and all it did was stuff up my computer and was useless against any viruses that were on my computer. The older versions aren't so bad but, even then, I'm keeping a large distance from myself and Norton Anti-virus. I've since then found AVG Free Edition which is a better anti-virus than Norton that actually searches for viruses, finds any on my computer and locks them up in a file called the "virus vault" (since viruses can never be deleted except if you format your computer). You can get AVG Free Edition from the following site:

Hope this helps!
You need a good defence if a trojan barges into your territory.

This is probably off base, but have you tried a system restore? Or a Repair Install?
Maybe even a winsock fix might work?
In fact, I would try it right away
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4372.htmlYou say it works on dialup? Maybe d/l that and try it....it can't hurt you.
Also, you may want to try Avast free AV and let it do a bootscan on reboot...I used to use AVG, but Avast is much better to my liking FWIW
Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

That's rite. After all, if your comp's running on Win XP than it should have system restore on it.
XpUser4Real, I've heard of Avast before. Can you download it for free or do you have to buy it? I think one of my family members uses it but I didn't know whether it was any better than AVG.

Yes Vi, it's free Avast! 4 home edition
It gives you online protection as you surf the net and if you get anywhere where a virus is invading your PC it immediately pops up with the message and you have choices on how to deal with it. No muss, no fuss. You don't have to schedule scans because it's working all the time and will also scan your mailMost times just move the virus to the chest and you'll be fine...don't try to repair or delete it. I've used Avast for about 4 yrs now
Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

AVG also has an email scanner but I don't think it has all the time online protection. Thanx, mate! I'll see if I can download it onto my computer. But does it require anything or are there different versions for it (for example, a separate version for Win 98 and a separate version for Win XP)?

Thanx! :)
By the way, good luck with your internet problem, globalvision! I hope you can get your IE back up and running.

Media Disconnected in ipconfig means that the cables are physicallu disconnected in the back of your PC or on your modem/router.
