can't see anything on c drive

May 4, 2011 at 14:11:39
Specs: Windows Vista, 4 gig ram

Picked up a trojen and it has "eraised everything on C drive. My screen is black, there are no programs listed in the start up window. I was able to get on line and did a quick virus scan from the Microsoft web site. Cleaned to items.
Re-booted and my Microsoft security is back, so I've been running a full scan. It has been scanning for 2.5 hrs, through all the programs that I'm missing.

I assume that I've lost something that displays my C drive files.

Another clue that everything might still be here, just hiding, is that "Programs & Features" on the control panel still lists all my programs. Also although my explorer favorites pull down empty, as soon as I start typing, my favorites prompt me.

Any thoughts out there??

Update.. The full virus scan found "win32/fakesysdef" It's gone now. Since I can't see my malware, I downloaded a new copy and it's running a full scan now. But.. It's 120+/- days old, and it wouldn't update.

Tried safe start for a system restore, but my back up points were gone.

Did I mention I'm running Vista 64 bit on a Dell Vostro.

Malware found 3 files, afterword, I was able to update and it found 4 more.

Ran Microsoft "Fix-it" and it caught several items, but the problem continues.

@ Agvozd. Thank you. I looked at the site you linked to, but the "Reviews" they listed seems to say that the hidden file and black screen/missing icons isues still persist after using the product.

And also try to run the task see if it works.

Master... Thanks again. The faint folders all bolded up upon the reboot.

I've found several program glitches I'm working through, some lost desk top icons and some other "issues".

My last "Big" problem that I'm unable to resolve is the start "Box".
When I click the MS Start Icon and the window pops up, my programs stil aren't listed, and when I click "all programs" several aren't showing up. Any other ideas? Thank you..!

Master... Thanks. That was my next step. My only problem was, that when I replaced my hard drive, the tech installed Vista64 bit, and my CD is 32 bit. He is giving me a 64 bit copy so I can run a repair.

Thank you again for your concern and assistance!

I assume is fake Windows Recovery virus or fake Windows Vista Recovery, both of them will hide away files and programs list. You can search more information about thses two virus to see if it is the same case on your computer, you will find more instructions online. Good luck to you!!

I just dealt with this very thing.... Caused by "windows xp recovery" - yet another fake pos malware program. There is a utility I found called "unhide.exe" which will undo all of the hidden files/folders. No need to run an os repair.

I'm not on my main machine at the moment, but I'm pretty sure I found the utility at

My total fix process was running combo fix from c: in safe mode, then running unhide.exe and all was well.
