Research support.microsoft.com for security issues relating to your version of Media Player running on Windows XP. Software often have to be updated.
Uninstall Media Player if Windows and MP updates don't fix the problem, do the usual clean-up routine and scandisk and defrag of your hard drive, and create a full backup.
Reinstall the most current version of Windows Media Player for XP from Microosoft's website.
Once everything is running, install Windows updates for Media Player and Windows updates from Microsoft.
