I am having a problem running exe files from my computer. I am pretty sure it is a virus but can't install NAV since I can't run exe's. I also can't start up a web browser so doing an online scan is out of the question also. Does anyone know a way to boot off of the norton cd and run a scan before windows loads up?

Bob,

You can enter your CMOS/BIOS on startup and change the boot sequence to boot to the CD-ROM first but the problem is that the CD has a very old and outdate virus definition that will not detect newer viruses.

There are other options but my brain is fryed from a cold I have right now. I'm sure others will post with some great ideas.

Don't know what virus you have but try:
If you have access to another machine copy the bold text below to notepad and save as Exefix.reg. Then copy it to a floppy disk and insert it in your problem machine and double click on it to merge with the registry.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command]
@="\"%1\" %*"

Reboot and try to run a .exe and try to go online and run a virus scan:

Let me know if you receive an error when you attempt to merge the .reg file.

You may have the PE_Pirate.A virus. It affects all .exe files. I had it, and I can tell you don't delete the virus, because it will delete most of the .exe files along with it. So if you are able to do a virus scan, just clean the virus, don't delete it. I now got NAV 2004, so it caught it right away when it tried to infect me again. Hope this helps.

Props to Tom41, thanks for the regedit code, that worked. However, I kept getting the error "can't find rogcerva.exe" ...says I needed it to run .exe files or .reg or .bat files. So I got a cmd prompt open and did a "start Execfix.reg" - it opened a new cmd window and that's all I saw, but it DID fix my error. After a reboot, I could run programs. So now I'm running NAV2004 for the second time and hopefully it will clean everything up for good (first time I ran 04 it cleaned 5 viruses but couldnt clean this last one...hence this post) Thanks again
