Can't remove Windows Security Alerts virus

May 15, 2011 at 00:23:48
Specs: Windows XP
I have the Windows Security Alerts shield in my system tray and I can't get rid of this virus. I was able to run malwarebytes and delete the files, etc. (so I have access to internet again) but I still have the shield. What do I do next to completely clean my computer?

Is the icon showing on the TaskBar a red shield with a white x in the middle?

If it is...
Click the Start button and select Control Panel
In Control Panel click the Security Center Icon.
On the left of the window you will see a list of options. Click on: Change the way security Center alerts me option.

In the Security Center Alert settings windows you have three options:
* Firewall
* Auto Updates
* Virus Protection

Remove the check mark from these options if you do not want to be alerted
Click OK

Is the icon gone from the tray?

To be safe, rather than sorry, can you post the Malwarebytes report showing the malware files?

You can get the report by going to the Logs tab.

well you could have an unwanted rootkit installed. Run these in the exact order:
1- rkill.exe (will kill the malware process)
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/dow...
2- TDSS killer (removes unwanted rootkit if it's there)
http://support.kaspersky.com/viruse...
3- malwarebytes- do a full scan and fix all it finds
reboot the pc

Some HELP in posting on Computing.net plus free progs and instructions Cheers

cc94,

If you had malware in the computer, it could have made modificatins to your security settings, and provide a reason for the Windows Security Alerts shields to show.

It is best to find out what was, or still may be, on the computer, and then take it from there.

The option to receive Security alerts can always be reversed to what you had, once you have a reasonable assurance the system is clean.

I'm not sure but I don't think the shield is the real deal. The virus that I had was made to mimic the Windows Security but was really a virus. I initially got this virus on Friday, was able to run Malwarebytes then and get rid of it. The next morning the red shield was there so I clicked on it to see what needed to be taken care of and the virus came back. So I think that by clicking the shield I gave the virus permission to download again or something. I don't know how to explain it very well because I am very bad with computers so does this make any sense?

Yes, it makes sense.

Can you open Malwarebytes, click on the Logs tab, post the Malwarebytes report showing the malware files?

You can get the report by going to the Logs tab, and post the Malwarebytes report when it found the virus?

Oh I forgot to mention this in my earlier reply but I actually tried to post the log but when I went to the Logs tab in Malwarebytes it was empty. But I know I ran the program and I deleted the bad files myself. Just not sure why it isn't showing up in the log. When I ran it I was in safe mode under administrator...could that by why I can't find it? Sorry...as I said, I am very bad with computers. I only got this far because I have a computer savvy brother. :)

I'm having the same problems !! I've run malwarebytes anti-malware, as well as kaspersky. I'm currently running a scan with "Microsoft safety scanner ". Hope it works !! Will know in a few hours, and I will post back my results.

I ran Kapersky last night, but the virus is still there. I downloaded a program from Microsoft to remove this virus and let it run all night. Virus is still there.
This morning I re booted in safe mode and ran "rkill", then started " Malware anti=maware" to do a full scan. I'll check to see what it found when I get back home later today.
This virus is preventing me from opening up any programs on my computer. When I click on a program icon, I get the "open with" pop up window asking me which program to open with !!
I really frustrated with this, and any help would be appreciated.Thanks
