Hello, I've recently been infected with a virus, I believe it is Sircam but much worse. I've seen previous topics on the forums here before and I couldn't find a solution. I can't run .com, .exe, and all of my shortcuts are blank. Every time i try to open it, it says it's either a .ink or a .lnk, can't open. I tried running registry editor and command but it says it can't open .com or .reg or .exe files, and I had done this in safe mode. What is the problem? Oh, and when I log on or off to accounts on Windows XP, i get this weird box saying some weird alt-codes like boxes. Please help, I'm in safe mode with networking now and have no idea what to do.

earlofnim, Go to the link below and scroll down to line 12 (left column) and click on "EXE (lnk and regfile) Fix for Windows XP" to download a ref file and save it somewhere you can easily find it.

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_...

Now press CTRL-ALT-DEL and open Task Manager. Once there, click File, then hold down the CTRL key and click New Task (Run). This will open a Command Prompt window. Enter REGEDIT.exe and press Enter.

If the registry editor opens click File>Import and browse to find that reg file you downloaded and left click it to hilite it then click the Open button and hopefully it will merge the contents into the registry then restart your computer. Post back with the results.

earlofnim, There is a COM File Association Fix and a REG File Association Fix available along with instructions at the link below. You may also need to use the same method to merge them into the registry as I posted in my Response Number 1 above in this thread.
