I had recently updated my virus definitions after forgetting to do so for a long time, and i ran a scan of my hard drive. it found a whole bunch of infected files, which i deleted. the viruses were W32/Torvil@MM, AdClicker-O, and Exploit-CodeBase. some infected files were svchost.exe and __sys.exe. these files sound fairly important, and i think i may have made a mistake deleting them.
Anyway, the problem is, i now can't open any programs. trying to open one will give me an error message saying that it can't find the program. one way i have found around this block is opening files of a program opens that program. (ex. .doc, .txt) What can i do?

Put you XP cd in, and it should give you the option to repair existing installation (working from memory here, XP on other machine). It's quite possible you deleted a valid windows file.

svchost.exe is a valid file IF it's within WinNT/System32/. All other instances of svchost.exe are garbage.

PS: Starting programs is EXACTLY what svchost.exe does!

Alright, I've found my cd and I tried the repair option. This leads me to a DOS type command prompt-thingy. Shameful as it is to admit, I really have no idea what to do next. Would anyone be willing to tell me what I need to do here?

Seeing that you still have the valid svchost.exe file in your system32 folder...I don't think repairing xp is what you need to do.
Try this first: (you will need to do it on working computer)

Go to:

http://www.dougknox.com/

Click WinXP Fixes at left
Click file association fixes on right
click EXE association fix on right
Save the download to disk on good computer.
It is a zip, unzip it and put the xp_exe_fix.reg to floppy.
Take floppy to affected computer and run the file.
Click yes at the prompt
Remove floppy and reboot.

What has happened is the virus messed up your exe file associations; not allowing you to run programs.

If that does not work...post back.
