Solved Can't install System Mechanic Professional in WIN. XP

April 26, 2012 at 23:32:48
Specs: Windows XP
I'm having trouble trying to install System Machanic Pro after error says Norton antivirus has to be uninstalled first. Did that and still get same error. The company says there is a way to get around that error if you don't have another anti-virus installed by finding out where your SMP .exe file is then change the path to where it says. Did search up came SYSTEMMECHANICPRO.EXE-0............C:\WINDOWS\PREFETCH. I TYPED IT IN TO "RUN" like they say to do
and i get "can not find SYSTEMMECHANICPRO.EXE............C:\WINDOWS\PREFETCH." And how do you change the path of a .exe. file anyway?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As with most software, some elements of Norton AV get left behind when you uninstall it, and with AV software that can be problematic when it comes to installing an alternative AV utility since it thinks you've still got Norton installed.

Use the Norton Removal Tool first, then try installing System Mechanic Pro again. Get the aprropriate removal tool here, it will scan for (and remove) any remaining Norton references:

Word of warning. There have been several reports on this forum where System Mechanic appears to have wrecked the system.

Personally I don't rate any of those type of programs because they are risky and unnecessary.

Forget Prefetch - nothing to do with your issue. Files there are only to speed up the start of programs (they will run without them)..

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

It worked! Thanks for the advice about using the Norton Removal Tool, it worked great. I thought I had deleted all the files. I didn't even have to put in my product key to use the tool, good thing, I don't even know where it is. Thanks again.
Have a nice day.
