can't install avg free 2011 will not complete

December 16, 2010 at 11:44:02
Specs: WindowsXPHome,SP3

I've downloaded AVGFREE2011 successfully, it installs to the point where I have to restart to complete the installation but when I restart I get the same message to restart to complete the installation. I had AVGFREE9 before this, which was uninstalled, of course, during the 2011 download, so now I have no AVG at all. What could be causing AVG not to finish installing after rebooting (I have rebooted several times and get the same message every time.

use revo uninstaller to remove AVG. It will also help you remove all registry items associated with it.
Then I would suggest you maybe try Avast Free which has much better real-time protection.
AVG has numerous major problems in the pat month or so.
The choice is yours.

Some HELP in posting on Computing.net plus free progs and instructions Cheers

Hi XpUser4Real,

Thank you very much for your reply.

After working at the problem for several hours, I finally got AVG FREE 2011 to install properly - this was before your reply, so if I have any problems running AVG I shall take your advice and switch to Avast Free.

Thank you again for your help.
Llion.

I typed a long reply to Hi-5's question when I wasn't logged in - when I tried to post it I was told it would be stored until I logged in and that it would then be available for me to post - I logged in but my message did not appear - how do I retrieve it? I can't see any option to do this.

Echo the above opinion.....I use to not mind AVG free, but 2011 has been causing problems. AVG provides a removal utility on their site which will usually give you a shot then at a clean install of avg 2011. Were you my client I would tell you to use the removal tool to make sure it is gone...and install AVAST.

Hi Henksey (and Hi-5),

If you had a previous version of AVG installed, which is what I had had and had uninstalled it (but not completely, as I later discovered) from the Uninstall option, or you had a part installation of 2011 after your attempts to download it, you could either download Revo Uninstaller, as advised by XpUser4Real (above) or download AVG Free Removal Tool to remove any AVG files and registry entries that were left behind, then download AVG Free 2011 again. Turn off any firewall/s you may have, and (especially) disable Zone Alarm if you have it, until after AVG has installed successfully - if you are sure you want AVG, that is - I did the installation for a friend's PC and laptop and AVG 2011 caused nothing but problems for him - the laptop slowed to almost a standstill and the PC stopped downloading updates after a couple of weeks and nothing would fix the problem. Take XpUser4Real's advice and go for AVAST. My friend is now using Avira, which seems to be ok, so far, and doesn't conflict with Zone Alarm.
