cant get avg update

hi,
i currently use the avg free edition & regularly update. came to do it again & i just cant connect at all. ive disabled my firewall (zonealarm) & re-installed avg completely to no avail.
i do appear to have picked up a virus however, in a file called 'GPTCR2'(i have not run it) in the windows directory. avg says this is 'BackDoor.Guptachar.H', i have no idea how this file got there & wanted to update avg before i removed it.
could this virus be the reason i cant connect to avg for an update?

No one can, download it yourself, make sure you download the right one. To check this, double click on the AVG icon down by the clock, Information tab, look at Program Version. Looks like this 6.0.637. The 637 is the last update you have. Download the correct one and put it in a new folder, name it AVG. Now open up the main AVG program by clicking on the AVG icon on your desktop or in your programs. On the top click Service, Update, From a folder, now just direct it to the folder containing the update and it will install it for you. MrC AVG-Free updates
