Comment:

I running Win98SE and Outllok Express 6.0 (OE6) and just installed NIS 2004. Everything in NIS works fine except that when I send email, the NIS (Symantec) EMail scanner still scans my outgoing email, despite that I've disabled this feature by opening NIS/Options/NAV/EMail and clearing the "Scan outgoing email" box".

The resulting problem is that when emailing an attachment over 2MB, my email server connection times out and Norton tells me to resend the file. I've maxed out my server connection time in OE6 to 5 minutes, but that's not long enough for a 56K DUN connection sending a 2+ MB file. I need to turn off the email scanner because while it's doing its thing, my server connection is timing out.

I have completley removed and re-installed NIS, three times, updating to the latest virus def each time. I even attempted to update OE6, although the MS website performs a rev check before updating and says I've already got the latest rev and aborts. I am considering removing OE6 and doing a fresh install.

Norton Tech Support is clueless and has stopped responding to my emails.

Any ideas of what I should do next?
Thanks,
Kev24

"my email server connection times out"

I have Broadband now but my dial-up connection would not time out till two hours has passed! Not five minutes.

My ISP once updated the service. This involved me downloading their update. After this update, I found the modem connection settings had been changed to 'disconnect after a few mins of inactivity' and to disconnect if the data transmission rate dropped below a certain level'. They did not tell me of this trick. I set things back as they were.

One of the settings is here.....
START - SETTINGS - CONTROL PANEL - MODEMS - PROPERTIES - CONNECTION. This is the idle disconnection bit.

You can view the modem log to see why it disconnects after only a few minutes.....
START - SETTINGS - CONTROL PANEL - MODEMS - PROPERTIES - CONNECTION - ADVANCED - VIEW LOG. If you see no log details, it may not be enabled. I can't remember how to enable it.

I can't remember how to check the LOW DATA RATE DISCONNECTION bit either.

Have you checked that you do not have spyware trying to access the Internet causing the disconnections?

See the free spyware removal program SPYBOT from.....
http://www.safer-networking.org/

There also the option of filtering attachments from sending & receiving in Outlook Express 6 (not in 5.5) TOOLS - OPTIONS - SECURITY. I don't think it's this though.

Post back with what you find & sorry my reply is fragmented.

Per your info, I went to

START - SETTINGS - CONTROL PANEL - MODEMS - PROPERTIES - CONNECTION, but the idle disconnection box is greyed out. My connection is always 53K+, so connect speed should not be an issue. Emailing 2MB+ files worked fine until installing NAV and I'm sure if I can disable its outgoing email scan, the problem will be solved. However, I will ask my ISP if they have a suggestion for maintaining my connection.

Thanks for your help. If I find a solution, I'll post it here.
