What message, if any, do you get when you try to delete the file. Any thing like 'File not found' ?
This may be a case where the virus plays sneaky and uses a 1 (number one) to replace the l ( lower case L ) in iexp1ore (compare with iexplore, do you see the difference ? ).

I had the same problem w/ ME and it took me a good week to figure out how to get rid of the thing. I ended up creating a system boot disk, then typing in "DEL C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\iexpiore.exe" If you want to do it this way, you will also have to disable the system restore function (though I am not sure if 98 has it), as the virus will most likely come back if you do not. The drawback is that this IS a system file that comes with Windows. After deleting it on my computer, I've received a warning message telling me Windows cannot find the file each time I startup. I tried writing some nonsense in notepad and saving it as "iexpiore.exe" but to no avail. Fortunately, the computer still computes fine, just with the annoying warning at startup. There are ways to clean this file, I believe, try searching Google.com for "iexpiore."

I also have Windows XP with the same backdoor.oblivion virus in iexpIore under my C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. I haven't deleted it yet because I haven't followed the complete instructions how to yet. You cannot delete iexpIore by yourself because it is a system file and always in use. Maybe you can delete it in safe mode, or download a clean version, I don't know, BUT the instructions on how to remove it can be found here:

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/backdoor.oblivion.html

Good luck to anyone who tries to remove it! Also, does anyone know what the virus does? Symantec says it allows unauthorized access to our computer (via Internet, I'm guessing) so I guess, when we once got a program, it launched itself, and now someone is watching us??? Who knows...
