Can't access system restore

Hewlett-packard Compaq nx7010 notebook
February 20, 2010 at 16:25:41
Specs: Windows XP
My computer today became infected by some kind of virus.

I have done all I can but when I try and do a system restore a box pops up saying:
"System restore has been turned off by group policy, To turn on System Restore, contact your domain Administrator."

I searched online and tried some of the solutions but none of them worked.

Any help much appreciated,

Is this a home computer or a work computer?

I'm not going to reset it and lose everthing that is on it.

It is an ex-work laptop - still haven't solved the problem but trying to get the discs for it.

If possible, try pulling the laptop's hard drive, mounting it in an external enclosure with USB cable, plugging the enclosure into a working PC with antivirus protection running, then run an antivirus scan on the drive letter assigned by the working PC to your hard drive. Also, make sure the free program Malwarebytes is installed on the working PC, and run a complete Malwarebytes scan scan on the drive as well.
