Specs: Windows XP
Security Essentials Popls up and says I have a virus win32/trojan. I click on clean and it brings me to another window with what looks like all the virus protection companies listed. Then tells me nothing will clean it but red cross and 2 others. How do I get the internet to download the right software with out access

rminch, since you were able to post this question, I'm assuming you have access to the net. I'm assuming you've been infected with an ad promoting the particular cleaners listed. Some of the more malevolent ones won't let you go to any of the more popular AV sites to hunt cleaners.
Assuming you can get there, be aware that a virus and a Trojan are similar, but not the same. Many times, an AV detects one it can't clean, other times, it gets missed entirely.
If you need to clean one, Superantispyware (info only. I’m not paid for recommendation. WARNING! FYI, a full scan on mine takes over an hour.) can do the job and you can get it free @:
among other places. They have a Vista compatible version if needed. Dunno about Windows 7 or later.
If it turns out that you need to use it, be sure to update Superantispyware prior to running and disable 'restore' (restart after cleaning) so the nasty doesn't get put back. They just released a new update recently and it changes all the time. Things are in a constant state of flux.
The restore thing is critical. May not be your deal at all, but won't hurt anything to try.

First of all, spyware and malware will change your internet settings.
Tap f8 on bootup and select safe mode. Once in safe mode open up IE and click on tools/internet options/connections/Lan Settings and then uncheck use proxy server.
Then click out of that.

Now click start/run and type in msconfig
click the startup tab and remove everything from startup, click ok or apply and then it will ask you to restart. Once you reboot, get online and download these 3 cleaners:
Trojan Remover
Hitman Pro

Run ALL 3 untill they are clean

PS: Super-Anti is not that good anymore for removing infections. But it may find something that the others miss, like cookies.

Some HELP in posting on plus free progs and instructions Cheers

Ed, Thanks for the great advice I am unable to get through the process as In boot up mode my computer is not responsive to the F8 command, so I am not even able to get that far and get into safe mode to see if the rest works when I reboot F8 is ignored and the computer just starts up like narmal with the pop up for the alert trojan.
