Cannot use search engines!!

Specs: Windows XP
Help Please! I see others are having similar issues so maybe someone has my problems too!! My issues started with being redirected when I searched through Yahoo or google. I would get a "gidsearch" site and then a redirect to somewhere unrelated to my search. If I type a web address in directly, it is fine. Now, I cannot search through the address bar or through any search engine without getting an error stating that there is a connection error. I have malwarebytes installed and it cannot find anything. I tried a trojan remover and it found nothing as well. I have AVG antivirus and that is updated and saying there are no issues as well. Someone even said something about renaming or deleting a file called "Hosts" which I found but cannot delete or rename. I am running Windows XP. I was using IE 8 but uninstalled trying to fix it that way and am now running IE 7 and having the same issues. If anyone can help, I would appreciate it. Thanks

you can run combofix, follow the tutorial on the following link and you should be fine:

If you cannot connect using IE, open IE, then click on tools/internet options/connections/Lan Settings and uncheck 'use proxy server'

Then close IE and open it again to see if you can get online.

Some HELP in posting on plus free progs and instructions Cheers
