Cannot search on Google

Acer Aspire laptop
May 22, 2008 at 22:31:26
Specs: Win XP, 1.7ghz/512mb
I think my laptop has contracted a pretty bad virus of some of the main problems is that I can access the Google homepage, but when I type something in ans select search - it just keeps on loading and it NEVER loads anything (this happens for when I search using the Google toolbar as well). I tried to go to Yahoo and use that search engine, but then it wouldn't even let me go on the Yahoo sites at all. This has been happening for over a week now. At the beginning, I thought that it was some adware issue because I kept on seeing pop-ups but at the moment I'm pretty certain that it's something more that that. A couple days after that, I noticed that I wasn't even able to connect to the internet. I switched to one of my backup network devices so now I'm able to use the internet again - but what in the world is going on? I'm blocked blocked from accessing a range of other sites too. Norton didn't detect anything, neither did Ad aware. It's driving me insane because I have a lot of work that requires researching and I seriously need Google.

At the moment I'm using a proxy to search on Google and that's how I managed to find this site...I don't know why I can search on google using the proxy...I'm on a network with other computers in my place. The other computers can access the internet and google perfectly - so it has to be something on my laptop.

Can someone help please?

A possible reason that your searches and internet can be messed up without any malware being detected is that although the malware may be gone the entries added to your hosts file may be still present. This is just one possibility but there coud be other reasons.

Go to your hosts file at this location

right click and open with notepad and copy and paste its contents back here. Close it when done. Don't clean it out because there will be entries that are legitimate (such as network references), or it might not have been altered.

Download HiJackthis and save it to your desktop.

Click here to download HiJackthis installer

Once it has downloaded double click HJTInstall.exe to run the program.

Click on the "Do A System Scan And Save A Logfile" button.

Once the scan has finished it will produce a notepad document, copy all of the contents and paste them back here.

Don't use HJT to "Fix" anything just yet as it will need to be analysed to see if there is any malware that might be present.

Thanks for the reply guys. I've been able to suddenly search on google again and the other sites. I didn't do anything to my laptop except restart it and close down these "luproxy.exe" that appeared in the processes...I'm not sure that I should have done that, but the internet is working. I have a feeling that there's something else wrong but I'll look into it and report back if it gets worse.
Thank you guys replying! :-)
