Cannot Open Programs

Gateway desktop / Dx4200

Specs: Windows Vista
It started this morning, I was surfing the web and all of a sudden, my internet shut down and my window's security option was opened and said that certain security features (Firewall, Malware protection, etc.) were not opened. Then it opened up a scan for Malware and all these 'infected' files were coming up. I have been in situations where fake virus scans have opened. I usually just click out of those and run my actual virus scan. I did the same this time; I clicked out of the scan and went to open my security center to fix things. When I clicked out, nothing wanted to open anymore. My 'Security Center' will not open, it "cannot find" the program. I cannot open up Internet Explorer, Word, or any other program; I can't even open my flash drive to save my files over. I can, however, open my word files. I have looked through this site and have even tried the task manager to open ‘regedit.exe’. It cannot even find that. I have it in my mind that I have a virus, and I want to know how to fix the problem.

Sorry this is so long-winded, I just want to get the full story out there so I can maybe fix this on my own. Geek Squad is awful expensive, and I don't want to be $500 in the hole just yet if I don't absolutely have to. Thanks for any help.

check out this:
all about what to do IF that problem arrises.
What you did was infect yourself.

You'll have to run these:
1- Malwarebytes, update it and remove all it finds
2- Trojan Remover, remove all it finds
3- Hitman Pro, run it untill the PC is clean.

If you imbedded a tough rootkit, you will have to use other tools.

Some HELP in posting on plus free progs and instructions Cheers
