I was working on my pc normally(downloading cricket 2007 from rapidshare.com.).after some time I noticed no program was working as all of them have been converted to lnk and the icon is like when windows does not recognise what file it is.Even registry editor is not opening from run. Please help. Any kind of help will be highly appreciated.
Intel Core2Duo
Windows xp sp2

Apoorv,
Go to the link below and scroll down to line 12 (left column) and click on "EXE (lnk and regfile) Fix for Windows XP" to download a reg file fix. Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt.http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_...
If you can't run the file do the following:
Press CTRL-ALT-DEL and open Task Manager. Once there, click File, then hold down the CTRL key and click New Task (Run). This will open a Command Prompt window. Enter REGEDIT.exe and press Enter. Once regedit is open click File>Import and locate that reg file fix, hilite it and click Open.
Note: If you can't access the Internet with the problem computer use another computer to download the reg file fix onto a CD or floppy and transfer the file to the problem computer.

Thank you very much for your response, but when I tried opening regedit.exe through command it said that it is not a recognised command. Also if I try open registry editor through Run then also it does not open, a dialog appears saying that windows cannot open this file. From Run neither command nor cmd is executing.I can access net from Mozilla only as IE has also been converted to lnk file.I cannot even run a virus scan as it has also been converted to lnk file.No video,mp3 is playing.Any other way to correct it?? Also please tell is this some sort of a virus or a trojan. Please Help...
Thanx again..

Apoorv, Go to the link below, click on "Security" (left side of page), click on "Disable/Enable Registry Editing Tools" (right column), then download the "regtools.vbs" file fix. Instructions are on the page. If this is successfull then follow the instructions in my first reply.
http://www.dougknox.com/index.html
Are you using Ad-Aware's "Ad-Watch" as there have been others who have had this lnk file problem due to allowing a registry change warning by Ad-Watch which they shouldn't have allowed.

Thanx for your response, but this "regtools.vbs" does not work.
Upon double clicking "regtools.vbs", a dialog appears saying windows cannot open the file and asks for web help or to select the program from a list. This is the problem with every program I try to run/execute. Also the address bar in windows explorer has disappeared. Please do tell some other remedy for this.
Thanx again..

Apoorv, Something (virus/malware) has really hosed your file associations. See if you can do a System Restore in Safe mode option with the Command prompt by following the instructions at the link below. Have you tried to run any virus/malware scans in Safe mode?
How to start the System Restore tool by using the safe mode option with the Command prompt in Windows XP.

Apoorv, Another thing to try is to go to the link below, click on "Win XP Utilities" (left side), click on "Create Emergency Copies of Critical XP System Utilities (Regedit, MSConfig and Task Manager)" then download the "xp_emegencyutil.exe" file. Instuctions for its use are on the page. Maybe you can then access the regeditor.

Thanx a lot for your response, but there's a problem with it too. I started in safe mode with command prompt, did all as u said but after executing rstrui.exe there was a blank dialog with system restore as heading but nothing in the body. Also this box came only after I executed the file twice, in one attempt there was no response. Also the pc is unable to start in safe mode. I downloaded the utility from dougknox, somehow extracted it, but again this opened a dialog which said windows cannot open this file and asked for web help or to choose the program from a list. It's all really messed up. Sorry I forgot to tell you that yesterday I opened a torrent site, of which unfortunately I dont remember the name. My antivirus warned me of a trojan being installed. I blocked it. But I think it has been installed from there only.
microsoft support site also could not help my cause.
Also i am unable to open add remove programs, date time settings, hardware settings. I mean only control panel is opening but no option in it is working. It gives the same dialog again...
But.... thanx a lot for your suggestions. Please tell some other remedy if available....

Apoorv, For the blank System Restore window try the possible fix under the Resolution section at the link below.
System Restore opens to a blank window?
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/srblank.htmHopefully it will work and enable you to do a System Restore to the closest date prior to when this mess started. I'm running out of ideas.

Thanx again for your reply..
I am sorry to say but this also does not work.I did as it said, typed the command but again that same dialog box appeared.
A new idea please....
Thanx a ton for your help...

Apoorv, Try the possible fix at the end of the page at the link below to try to access regedit.
If successful there are more instructions on the page to fix the exe file association."If you're unable to launch Regedit.exe even from Command Prompt, try this:"
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/exefile.htm
I'm out of ideas.
Tufenuf

rename regedit.exe regedit.com
then run regedit.com
find
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ exefile \ shell \ open \ commandDouble-click the (Default) value in the right pane
Delete the current value data, and then type:
"%1" %*

Thanks Tufenuf. But I checked the system32 folder and there is no file by the name of regedit. That means it has been deleted. So I cant open it and use the fix. thanx anyway.

Apoorv, There should be a copy of regedit.exe in the C:\Windows folder and the C:\Windows\System32\dllcache folder which is a hidden folder NOT the C:\Windows\System32 folder. If there is no copy in the Windows folder open the dllcache folder, right click the regedit.exe file, choose "Copy", then open the Windows folder find an empty space, right click and choose "Paste"
Before you do the above go into Folder Options>View tab and select "Show hidden files and folders" and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files etc.", click Apply/OK.

Thanx Tufenuf the link u gave in Response no.11 actually helped. To some extent the pc is working correctly. I also downloaded HijackThis and Spybot. Now I am able to open regedit, cmd not command thru Run. All the setups I have on hard disk are running. The problem is with the windows installer now. Whenever I try to uninstall anything from Add/Remove Program it says windows installer cant be accessed. Some programs are unistalling from there uninstall.exe but some are not. Also programs requiring windows Installer to install are not installing. but now as IE was not working(it just blinked and went) earlier, mozilla is also creating problems. when I click on mozilla In task manager the Process shows but not the Application, and the window does not open. After a lot of restarts I am able to do this. Please tell if there is a remedy to these. Thanx a lot..

Apoorv,
I recommend that you start a new thread on this forum and explain the problems you now have and ask permission to post a HijackThis log. You can reference this thread but DON'T post the HijackThis log until someone gives you the OK.Tufenuf
