Comment:

If you simply surf the web to various websites, but don't download anything or take any action (such as clicking on executable files) other than clicking to a certain page, is it possible for a virus to get into your machine? How dangerous is it to simply browse the web? Are there applets that can do damage simply by going to a page?

You can certainly get a virus by browsing. Nimda comes to my mind immediately.

js.exploit maybe too.If you are visiting popular websites this will be uncommon. If you go to warez sites than you run a risk.

I agree, I had Norton pop up & halt my computer going
to a Google 'cached' page, emailed Google several times
about it but they never answered...I was glad Norton
protected me.

If you have a popup killer and disable activex/java in explorer/netscape settings, your can't get virus that way.

Hi there,

Yep, I already set the DISABLED for UNSIGNED the scripts, java and ActiveX.

I have Pop-Up Stopper too

if not set to disabled then you'll get a virus/trojan inside of embedded HTML to run it.

Hacker, Warez and Malicalous and Defaced sites very RISK at your owns.

Have a firewall, AV Scanner to be on the puter to protect it..

Hello,

Unfortunately you can if you use IE's default browser settings. It seems that any version of IE has more leaks then a sieve, particularly to activeX or java scripts; not to mention homepage hijacking (just got out of one of those myself..)and trojans.
Take a look at www.astalavista.com; they have some good texts on internet security and how to set up a system to combat the problem.

good luck,

yoshi

Sunday I looked at some old E-mail's that I had not actioned. One advertised a cheap book site - no other text. Rather than click on the link, I copied it to the address bar of IE and clicked go ! Screen went black and Norton kicked in to inform me the site I was opening was infected with W32.nimda.A@mm virus. Fortunately Norton gave me the option to delete the file. The web page continued to load while I desperately tried to close it down along with two pop-up's. I managed it after Norton kicking in again.. what I may be should have done was pull the telephone plug out ( I'm on a dail-up connection). As a side note.. Norton has saved me from 5 viruses in just under a year of surfing.

I read somewhere recently that there are sites which when you visit them, they post up a "fake" browser and windows and their links led to trouble. Problem is, you only see what you are expecting to see as you surf, but you are really getting deeper and deeper into their dodo by clicking on what appears to be regular pages. It replaces your legitimate browser, etc with bad things.

if you ask me after surfing the web looking for the answer . its my opinion that no one out there has the cahunas to look for and post the solution to js. exploit. 99% of the big brains out there in computer world are all talk and no action . probably the same in bed!
