Can virus's damage hardware?

just wondering, i know they can (and do) destroy data, or format your hard disk, but can any do irrecoverbale damage to your hardware?

There is a couple such as CIH (chernobal) that can destroy the BIOS. Supposedly only affects up to and including windows me. By destroying the bios many times you end up buying a new motherboard or if the bios chip is removable then that chip would need replacing. (I dont think you would be able to re-flash the flashable bios because you need the bios to detect te floppy drive in order to boot with it to do the flash) If you had/have that virus as long as it was removed before bios destruction...you are fine. Apparently the CIH virus "wakes up" on the 26th of april to do it's destruction but not always sucessful in its full destruction.
I don't know of any that does any other hardware destruction. (unless the virus overwrote some driver files for hardware you have which is repairable by reinstalling whatever drivers after virus removal) _____________________________
