Can msn messenger get hacked?

I am concerned that my security is being compromised when using msn messenger. Is it possible for anyone to get software that can see convosations between people? There are websites that claim they can see who has banned you etc, so it doesn't seem to far fetched to assume there are other websites offering more malicious software.
Also, what security threats are there if someone can see your IP address? I didn't think it was that much of a big deal. What can hackers do with an IP address?
