I am concerned that my security is being compromised when using msn messenger. Is it possible for anyone to get software that can see convosations between people? There are websites that claim they can see who has banned you etc, so it doesn't seem to far fetched to assume there are other websites offering more malicious software. Also, what security threats are there if someone can see your IP address? I didn't think it was that much of a big deal. What can hackers do with an IP address? Thanks :-) unistudent

its not as simple as 'hacking'.. it is a very broad term, the so called 'hacker' would have to bypass wave after wave of security.. after all, it is an MS product. in answer to your request to you IP quiery.. why not try downloading some software to mask your IP, therefor the 'hacker' wont be able to find out your IP address in the first place.. Comcerning your "IP" it is the doorway to inside your computer from the net. I recommend that everyone who is on the internet get and use a software Firewall. Yes you do get one with Windows XP as standard.. but i wouldnt rely on it for main protection for your IP address.. Most top of the chart Computer security I.E Norton Internet Security, McAfee, Avast offer these services with the software package.. Although Norton is very good protection for your computer.. it does have noticable effect on the speed of your computer.. which can be extremely annoying.. Nice One.. =]

I reccomend not to use MSN messenger or Windows Live messenger.. as they tend to make your computer freeze alot.. Nice One.. =]

Thankyou for your comments guys. I have zonealarm which does a good job of protecting my computer. Do firewalls hide your IP address as standard? As for msn messenger, I read an article that as long as you are using any messenger/IM program there is always a doorway into your system. unistudent
