If I send someone an email from hotmail or yahoo, can it be traced back to my IP address, or IP block for my ISP?
And likewise, when I get an email from a hotmail account can the IP address or block of the sender's ISP be traced?
If so, how could I trace an email sent to me from hotmail?
Thanks in advance.

server. this relays all info to somewhere else IE( like canada)( and your really in the states) then all trafic is rerouted back to that ip address then to yours. so it's kind of like a middle man. this way it's a little harder to trace you. and yes you can trace an ip address from hotmail. look into the header of the email a good way to do this is to ready if from bottom up. then the last ip address you see will be the person it's from.

What do you mean read the header?? All I ca ever see is the senders email address, where do you locate the IP address??

jon, it looks like part of you post got cut off. Thanks, good info. I forgot about looking in the header ;)
and to no name, in hotmail you can display the complete header info by clicking on options, in the third column - additonal options - click display mail settings, then by message headers check advanced.

Two types of IP addy,
1 - Stactic
2 - Dynamic
Most companies (ISP's) like AOL all have dynamic IP addresses this is to stop hackers from getting onto there network, there for they change every IP everytime a user logs on, Static is the opposite, it always uses the same IP addy like IE.
Neo

What do u mean with:"it always uses the same IP addy like IE."
What is IE? IE as in Internet Explorer?

Neo, ur reply (#4) is completely unrelevant with the question.Well, I sugest u, either learn more about computer and stop posting ridiculous posts or shut up.

I will have to agree with my friend Sanjaya,
What are you talking about????
IE is Internet Explorer .....
Man (Rookies)

agree with you ghost man on the (rookies thing) Neo i would have to disagree with you NEO if i even have you staick or your dynamic there are ways of still connecting

You people are not thinking! If you wanted to trace someone's IP address, you would have to find out if it where either Dynamic or Static. You wouldn't know if the person's IP address is the same as the time he sent the Email. Everyone isn't the same.

Neo's info IS relevant to this Q, In order to trace ISP maybe not, but EXACT person it is because there are randomly generated 'tail' numbers every time you connect to the net. Therefore you would have to contact the ISP & find out who had the specific ##s at the time mail was sent. This is true to the best of my knowlege... If i am wrong i'm sure someone will correct me. A2Z

Thanatos and A2Z let me teach you a little something from someone coming with 10 years of IS . does not really matter if the IP address is static or dynamic. as long as you have there ip addres. meaning you know the doman it came from there you do a trace on the the domain. find the admins info. email them a short email. it's called Social engineering And NEo not sure what the heck your talking about either. make your self a little more clear as to what the answer is that your trying to get at. A2Z also it's not only the Tail numbers that are Changed it depends on a few things first it depends on what type of domain and addressing is behind it. Class networks and how many ip address do they have asigned to that Class range.

A2Z nope your still wrong A2Z because you just said the tail numbers meaning the last oct in the ip address ex... 192.235.32.XX
this is what your saying this is what really happens depending on the class of the net work
192.235.xx.xx what class is this A2Z

A2Z another thing you said about couldn't trace the exact person becaues your oct's change that's a little true but not. if you have the ip address from which the message came from and you know how to craft an email. you can send the message to the admin of that domain . depending on the content they do have logs of who logged on during tha duration of time and which user connected
