Only one thing : Check your startup programs.
With MSCONFIG or a startup manager disable them all and try enable one at a time and check your PC's performance.
Before you do this scan also with Ad-aware
(if you haven't done it)and Spybot
Spybot Search & Destroy

georges has a good idea about adware removers.I use Adaware and Spybot. They both work well and will remove items such as gator and other nuisances that slow you down.Try these programs and see if that helps. You may be surprised at how many gators and those type of programs get on your system if you use p2p download sites.

Hi i seen your new post but will answer here, I will keep an eye out here to see if i can help resolve speed problem for you. The responses you have already are good but if still slow i have a couple ideas to speed you up hopefuly,
1 If you dont have it already you should get "reglcean" from Microsoft & use it, theres a better one called "regcleaner" by Jouni Vuorio but if your not comfortable playing with registry use the MS one.
2 Shutdown all startup items you dont need all the time in MSCONFIG
3 Make sure you have PC set for "Network Server" in sys properties
4 Enable DMA for hard drive. to do this right click on MY COMPUTER & choose PROPERTIES> DEVICE MANAGER> DISK DRIVES & choose the one that is your hard drive, (mine says 'Generic IDE Disk Type 46') Choose PROPERTIES> & then the SETTINGS tab, put a check mark on the DMA, click OK then OK & Windows will give you a warning, ignore it & choose to reboot (required) This can speed up PC greatly!
Post what is running in background, (CTRL ALT DELETE one time at same time) This will tell us alot that can be helpful. for instance especially if you see "LoadQM". this is a nusance program that slows your PC down online & offline, it constantly checks for updates for MSN Messenger. you DO NOT need it & disabling it will be rewarded with faster, more stable performance. Post back results... Gool luck Speedy

Go to MY COMPUTER> DIAL UP NETWORKING> & right click on your connection & choose PROPERTIES & then choose the SERVER TYPES. The ONLY check marks should be on ENABLE SOFTWARE COMPRESSION & TCP\IP This eliminates the 'handshake' with ISP, Other than that make sure you have latest drivers for your modem. It may be that there is too much static in the phone line, or possibly your ISP is having problems @ their end. Fax machines, answering machines, caller ID can all possibly interfere with connection, as well as "splitters". you could just try having only the PC hooked up direct & see if that makes a difference. Theres alot of info & a forum at 56k.com that deals with modem issues

The best way i can think of without having modem drivers on a disk is to delete, yes DELETE your modem in system properties> device manager. When you reboot windows will rebuild drivers for it, i've had to do this myself & it fixed me up. If it IS a hardware problem, you might as well spend the 20-30$ for new modem. Good Luck

Glad we could help, but wish we coulda sped ya up to what you wanted, its nice you post back explaning whether the info helped or not, it could be useful to someone doing a search with their problems. I usually dont post unless i am 90%+ my answer 'could' be of use. But NEVER try to steer someone wrong! Just be careful with advice from people you dont know (& some you DO!) & try to get a second opinion before making major changes. ESPECIALLY BIOS UPDATES! you dont want to screw that up! Speedy
