I wanted to check if he had addressed CWShredder and cannot hit his web site nor can I hit http://tomcoyote.org/forums/ as well.
I also have not got an e-mail reply from Merign as he has in the past replied to me. So I am just wondering if anyone can get to either...

I tried to go to that site to download CWShredder and HijackThis. The site was unavailable. CoolWWWsearch virus got a hold of my computer and I figured from the posts I have read here, that was the site to go to to download what I need to get rid of this pain in the neck. I can't find any site that offers either one of those products to download those products.

hotrod
i emailed you them but becarefull what you delete there not the most curant ones.••• Resistance is invigorating! •••

Spywareinfo down as well, all of them have been having problems of late.
Several comments by mods over the past week or so mention an attack by CWS, whoever he is.Could be a vast conspiracy.
shep

Shep,
You are alive???
I thought you died on me :)
I wonder why they have all gone offline at one time? Think they pissed somebody off? Anyone have any clues?
KTTD

Well the main page is back up but the site is still having issues. If you click on the download page I am getting a Page Not Found...
So lets hope he gets things fixed soon.
KTTD

Abnormal,
Thanks for the info. Does not surpise me that they are being hit and I doubt this will be the last time it happens. The bad guys are losing money because of folks like them and do not like it.
As you most likely know a lot of anti-spam sites have gone offline latley because of DDOS attacks on them and they just have given in. I hope the folks at these sites will not.
KTTD

While those sites are having issues, you may want to try: http://www.lurkhere.com/~nicefiles/

Shep, thanks for the info. I haven't been able to get to spywareinfo and the others for several hours now. Tom Coyote and Merijn are both hosted by spywareinfo.

Finally fuond a site to download cwshredder from:
http://www.net-integration.net/tools/hijackthis.htmlNow i just hope it work cause this thing is driving me nuts...

The links to web pages with CWShredder provided here point to sites with backlevel version of CWShredder.zip. The last one (net-integration.net) gives you v1.39.6. And the lurkhere.com site has v1.44.2.
I have a copy of CWShredder.exe v1.48.1 (size 124,416) and a copy v1.48.2 (size 124,516) that I downloaded Wednesday morning early before the DOS attack started. Seems to still be down now.
Will send KTTD a copy in case this takes a while to resolve the DOS on Spywareinfo.

For another mirror sites for CWShredder and HJT, see http://forum.mvps.org/viewtopic.php?t=3886

This makes me so angry. I just cannot understand why some people have to ruin things for other people. I don't know a damn thing about computers, but I do know that people who write programs (viruses, trojans etc) to hijack and ruin and whatever these programs are for, those people are mean idiots. They absolutely do not care who they hurt - giving s--- (a virus or whatever) to some expert on computers might not feel that bad, because that person is able to fix the problem. But then there are people like me, who just totally panic and get really sad, because we don't know what to do. But then there are the good guys, like Merijn and others who help so many. And then there are these help forums. Anyway, I'm just angry, because I don't understand why people have to do these things. I wish that all us "good guys" could stand together somehow, and ruin things for the "bad guys". Why isn't there something we can do? Like in real life we could have gone out and beat them up, why isn't there some way to beat them up and punish them over the Internet. Well, I'm just angry with these stupid people, sorry if this doesn't make any sense.

I think it should be legal to beat them with their keyboard until one of them breaks (the malware writer or the keyboard). Just another evil thought.
At the very least, it should be legal for organized DOS (or other) attacks against those employing these tactics. Then this nonsense would stop immediately - cause it would cost them mega bucks if they didnt stop.

It is not legal to do a DOS attack, even on "them". (They have their rights too.) And for most home users, it would be a violation of their user agreement with their ISP for you to take any part in such an attack.
While some of this is done by hackers seeking recognition (often just self recognition), this case involves something much more powerful and harder to stop.
$ Money $
The creators of CoolWebSearch and the other "Browser Hijackers" make money from redirecting peoples browsers. They get paid for the number of redirected page hits to sites and ADs. So this is just a counter attack on those who are cutting into "their profits".
The people who put out the Browser Hijackers, those that allow them on their web sites, and the people who pay for all of this are doing it for money. Big bucks.
To give you an idea, think of this little story. A year and a half ago a sharp programmer was hitting up his drinking buddies to let him setup Web pages for them for just $75 (as he had no job or other income). Did a nice job too. He knew how to get the pages to come up in search engines. One of his customers was so impressed by the results, he asked him if he could send out e-mail ADs for him and some of his associates. This programmer, now has a small warehouse office full of PC servers and has claimed to have made over one million dollars last year. (And I am sure most was not reported to the IRS. Still trying to find out more information about his "business".)
With that kind of money being paid for SPAM services, there is little wonder there is so much of it and that they use such methods as hijacking peoples browsers.

I know attacks are illegal, against anyone.
When I read about this garbage I get mad, like the above poster. My fantasy is for these tactics to be outlawed. Companies employing these tactics could be placed on a list (kept by the FTC?) and fined / have their websites taken down.
They would lose lots of money. They would not be able to sell their product. They would have to pay huge bandwidth charges. They would have to resort to more honest methods or shut down.
I know I am oversimplifying it, but like I said: it is my fantasy (and much less violent than the keyboard one).
Am am curious as to what their rights are. I have heard freedom of speach is an issue, but that implies I can be forced to listen.

I think that "they" are biting their own tail in a way. By creating all these mean programs they cause people a lot of grief being on the net, and in the end people are just going to give up using the net.
It makes me sick to my stomach to hear that "they" have their rights too. Sad but probably very true. But what kind of rights do they have - they do not have rights to bombard my computer with garbage. And don't "they" break the law by doing what they are doing? But still "they" have their rights? It is ridiculous. But where are my rights? My computer is my little space, and I should have my rights to keep that space safe and mine. But I don't. It obviously does not work that way. As I have said before, I have no knowledge of computers. I am like a lot of people - I like to go on the Internet, look things up and stuff like that, but when it comes to knowing how a computer works and how to cure problems, I know nothing. Anyway, somehow I have been picking up a lot of garbage (viruses, trojan), I don't know how, but they got into my computer. Sometimes twice a day my firewall alerts me that someone with this or that IP address have tried to attack my computer, but has been stopped. To me it is weird, because I am one of those people who hardly ever download anything and I never open any emails where I don't know the sender. Even if I know the sender, I don't open it if there is an attachment. Still I have had all these nasty things. Well, what I want to say is, having had all these problems with hijacked startpage and what have you, has made me kind of paranoid. I don't like to surf the net anymore, because I don't know what I can catch. The Internet is no longer such a fun place. Recently, the only things I really look at on the internet are these kind of forums - to get more knowledge, to be better prepared etc. That is how all these people with their worms, hijacks and whatever have affected me. And probably a whole lot of people will react the same way - and maybe eventually people like me wont even bother with the Internet anymore, because it is just too much of a hassle and it gives us too many problems.
Tanja

TanB,
Getting more off-topic, but I am trying to help.
If you keep getting nasties, you might want to get a better anti-virus program (or keep yours updated better). I recommend PC-Cillin or Pandasoft AV (there may be others as well). Make sure you keep it updated.
Make sure you have applied all Windows critical updates - as soon as they come out.
Go to one of the sites mentioned above when you can and download and install spywareblaster. Make sure you keep that updated as well. It will prevent lots of spyware from ever being installed.
You can also disable your active x controls in IE, but some web sites might not work right.

TanB,
What type of programs do you have on your computer? Do you use any file sharing programs? Do you use a pop-up stopper? Do you use Anti-Virus? What type of web sites do you visit? Does anyone else have access to the computer?
I have discovered that younger people tend to have the most issues with their computers. Teenagers being the worst group and something 20's the next. 90% of all the spyware/virus removal calls I run are because of teenagers using P2P programs and surfing for porn and it is not just the guys, the girls do it as well.
A lot of older folks do not have these problems because they do not visit the type of web sites that will infect your computer with spyware nor do they download tons of stupid little programs.
I'm not saying you surf for porn or visit web sites that are very questionable I'm just speaking from expereince. There is a good side and very dark side to the internet. The dark side is the one that will get you everytime if you are not highly protected.

Hi KTTD,
You asked me a few questions about my computer. I don't know if you meant that I should answer, but I would love to answer them. Maybe you can figure out why I have had so many problems. Where I have gone wrong.
First of all, it is a brand new computer, so I haven't really put anything on it. I have downloaded a few things (CWShredder, Ad-Aware, SpyBot, Trojan Remover and Hijackthis). Before SpyBot I had downloaded another program. I forget what it was called (something with spy..killer...or...hunter), but after running the scan, I had to pay to get things removed, so I deleted this program again. Other than that I haven't really downloaded anything. Yes, a word game called SuperTextTwist.
Then I have saved a few pictures on my computer that I have found on the net. Pretty pictures I can use on the desktop. When I go on the net I mostly visit sites about books. I look stuff up stuff that I have read about and things like that. And I visit eBay a lot. This computer has never been used to look at porn. I know that for a fact. But I had the trojan.bookmarker which put porn sites in the favorite folder in IE, so I don't know if that was enough. I don't ever use IE. I have AOL. I have Norton AV and Firewall, both things totally updated. The only thing that I can think of that could have maybe given me all these problems is Kazaa. My boyfriend has used it to download about 15-20 songs. But after I got the first problem with trojan.bookmarker, I told him never to use Kazaa again. The Kazaa icon and program is still on here, but it is not being used. But even after he stopped using Kazaa I got problems. Don't know if that has any meaning. I don't know what else to tell you about my computer and my habits, but I hope that you can see why I have had all these problems from my looong boring post. Also, if you can tell me how I pick these things up. Is it enough to visit a website? And also, something that is bothering me, is it "natural" to get all those warnings from my firewall telling me that someone has tried to attack my computer? I track the IP with Symantec visual tracking, but what am I supposed to do with that. Anyway, all advice on how to use the net and computer safely is welcome.
Thank a lot,
Tanja

Kevin made great points that I should have thought of in my post.
spykiller was spyware that may have downloaded more spyware.
Kazaa installs spyware.
If you ever got a popup about needing to install something to view a website - more spyware was installed.
The ebay toolbar is spyware, if you installed it, that can install more spyware.
You can read the index.dat in notepad to see if any porn sites have been visited by your pc (be careful to remove the "always open with" checkmark for .dat files, otherwise you will have problems).

TanB,
See another user has caused some of your issues, that user being your boyfriend because he installed Kazaa which is a crap ass program. E-mail me and I will send you Kazaa Begone so you can get rid of it.
Spyhunter and Spykiller just add more junk to a system as well. I take it you have run both Ad-Aware and Spybot with the proper updates and removed the junk it found.
As far as the firewall, ignore the incoming pings. If you are on a broadband connection, DSL/Cable you are going to get lots of them, ignore them. You will just stress yourself out over them and a lot of them are legit pings from legit web sites. The internet is a two way street, information has to be transmitted both ways for things to work properly.
Most home users will never be attacked by a true hacker who wants to break into your system. Now if a virus, worm or trojan gets on the system that is a different story but just let your firewall do it's just and ignore all the attempts as it is "normal" for this to happen.
If the firewall is setup properly the person attempting to ping/scan your IP will not get a reply and just move on.
I'm not saying this to be mean but once again a computer has issues because your boyfriend installed Kazaa that installs spyware and the problems just get out of hand from there and Kazaa is also a great place to infect your computer with a virus.

Thank efabes,
Ha, so spykiller was spyware? That is just so ridiculous and mean. Well, when I ran the scan from it, it did come up with like 700 things. Weird things. Maybe I shouldn't have been so worried about all the results, since they were probably just false. oh boy, who can you really trust? Well, that make sense, unfortunately. Scarring people into buying their stuff.
Tanja

KTTD, great stuff. Thanks a lot Kevin. And no, you are not mean, you are very helpful. So, Kazaa is that bad. Yeah, I kind of did figure thats where the problems started. And it got worse, but even when Kazaa wasn't being used anymore?
This Kazaa Begone, is that the thing you can download from Merijn? Then I'll just get if from there, you don't have to worry about sending me stuff.
So, when I get this Kazhit begone, it will remove all traces of Kazaa forever?
Also, what is p2p? Is that something I need to get off my comp too?
Tanja

Hi everyone!
I haven't seen this site mentioned here, but...the "SWI forums-coolwebsearch & other malware," is also down. Just thought I'd throw this one in too.
And, I just tried getting into Merijn's site and as of 10:50pm EST it is still down.
I haven't been on my 'puter since Wed night, so I had no idea all this was going on! I thought it was a problem with my modem or something today when I tried to get on there.
Darn, all this is so annoying!
--Viv :)

This is strange, I have not been able to reach the SpywareInfo sites from my Adelphia account, and now from an AOL account I have access to. However, several times today I had no trouble reaching these sites through my EarthLink dial-up account.
I have had e-mail contact with several people who were not having trouble accessing SpywareInfo.com???
Part of the problem may be that their ISP is blocking large blocks of IP address ranges where the redirected attacks are coming from.

I haven't been able to access spywareinfo for over 48 hours now :(
I think JackG hit it right on when he said it's all about $$$. Damn greedy SOB's. If we could get rid of the greed factor, this world would be a different place! The internet is like the Wild West. All the crooks and robbers think it's their playground.

Indeed it's down.. :(
I've managed to get the latest packages from it and i've put it here :
