Can a worm act like a virus?

Specs: Windows XP
Before posting my query I would like to mention that I am from an engineering background and am working on a project to secure a process control system.

I have read up articles on the internet to understand the difference between a virus and a worm.

From what I understood a virus would normally execute itself by placing its code in the path of some other code/routine and put the system into some loop/ generate copies of itself etc. In such a situtation the system could slow down or the hard disk might eventually crash because of no extra space. A worm on the other hand would sitting on one computer try to find security holes on the computers networked to it and send a copy of itself to those computers.

Firstly, I'd like to know if the understanding that I have developed is correct or not and secondly, if there is a possibility that
(1)a virus can spread from one computer to the computers networked to it through ethernet
(2)a worm sitting on a computer could cause any harm to the computer other than affecting/spreading through to the computers networked to it
(3) there exists a virus which can do both of these jobs i.e. spread across computers and cause the slowing down of the computer it is sitting on/ crash the hard disk drive

Your understanding is not quite right.

Go to wikipedia for the correct definitions of computer virus and computer worm.

You should also stick with your original post located here:

It's not like I haven't read up wikipedia.

(1)Do you have a qualification for each and every type of field that you have expertise in?
(2)Haven't you ever worked on a project where you didn't already know/understood everything or where had to take help from people regarding some information/understanding? If you haven't then I must say you should try once.

Aren't forums for this very purpose??

For your information, I was assigned this project because people considered me smart enough to gather information, interact with people and understand things.

There was really any need to post the earlier link on query. The two are totally different questions.

It's ok if you dont want to help me on this. But its sad that people like you who actually understand things are not willing to share their knowledge.
