There are viruses like klez that'll shut down av scanners. Klez is going around alot mainly because people aren't being smart about what emails and attatchments they open. Run msconfig (start--run--msconfig) and open the startup tab and see if you have an entry referring to a file that looks like winkxx.exe where xx are random letters. (Or you can also see if you have a winkxx.exe file in your windows folder.) If you see one then you're infected with the klez worm. If that's the case go here and type in klez and hit go and you'll find removal info and tools to get rid of it.

I have the same problem. Mcafee Virusscan will run only in safe mode. it found the BackDoor-G.svr.gen virus in ops1.exe file.
Then I was asked to clean, not delete. When clean was pressed it showed up deleted and I can't find a trace of either of these now. NOthing has changed. And in addition to not running Virusscan and defrag, various windows disappear after about 5 seconds, including the msconfig startup tab window.
Please help!
