Can a home router pickup a virus?

December 1, 2010 at 11:20:22
Specs: Windows XP
I think my netgear wireless router has a virus. Our computers go crazy at home with lots of redirecting, not loading, etc. When we take our laptaps elsewhere, this doesn't happen. Is it possible my router has a virus or something? If so, how can I clean it up. Also, my router doesn't have securtiy on it and I don't know how to do that. I reinstalled it so I could put a lock/security on it and wasn't prompted to do so.
Please help!

Start by resetting the router to its default settings - normally just needs a pointed object inserted into the reset button when the router's on/powered up.

Next I'm afraid it's a case of getting out the manual for the router - setting the security is fairly straightforward and is normally part of the setup process if you use the installation CD, but if not then doing it manually just involves you accessing the routers setup page from your browser and then changing the settings as required.
