hi all
i was asking if anyone knew about the new bullguard 2.0 p2p, firwall, antivirus security package
the capt commented that he'd heard it was good but i should report back on my experiances
disclaimer, i guess i know more about my computer than the average user, but the readers on this list are way above the average user, which places me near the bottom of this heap...
anyway, i'm really impressed with the way its working on my system. i have used blackice defender before and it did a good job of staying in the background but i never really understood the reports it gave me or what it was doing, "someone or somebody has tried to enter port 139, they could either be trying to hack in or it could be harmless...." - thanks for that bit of info
...when blackice seemd to be blue screening my home computer with xp pro sp1 i gave it the flick and tried zonealarmthat was much more in my face and i never really knew what it was doing but it had the system so well locked down i had to turn it off to even read my yahoo email...
now with the bullguard i seemed to have struck a happy medium that fits my newbie firewall knowledge, ie, it seems to run itself pretty quietly and when it gives me a report it is in simple enough english that i understand my options and am slowly working out how to customize the security level i need for my surfing
last night i turned all cookies off and am now finding which ones i need to keep using yahoo, google etc. and allowing essential ones only
i have read on this list and elsewhere of firewalls with stealth modes and would like the option but so far it hasn't jumped out at me with bullguard
so to sum up, i like it, it seems to be more user friendly than others i have tried and is more than just p2p protection
if firewalls have been giving you a headache try bullguards 20 day free option

early days yet, but its allowing me to learn what firewalls do and why

The whole Port 139, That bassicly means that someone is trying to access your NetBios. And if you have File and Print sharing on without password protection over a network or something they could get in... If you wanna see if you do go to Command prompt and type:
nbtstat -A ***YOUR IP***
So if your IP is 123.456.78.90 then you would do:
nbtstat -A 123.456.78.90
*with your firewall off so it doesnt stop it*
If you see a that means File and Print sharing is on... Which is bad, unless it's password protected. I am not sure if BullGuard is free of Spyware and Adware so If I were you I would download AdAware (http://www.majorgeeks.com/article.php?sid=506) and check your system. Also if you use KaZaa Media Desktop I would download KaZaa Lite, It's KaZaa Media Desktop, with no ads, spyware, or trojans.HTH

thanks HTHam using kazaalite and after loading did load and scan with adaware
as to the port 139 thing.....will keep working on that

It is really good to get users feedback about new or unknown products from the smaller software firms. Bullguard is also supposed to have antispyware filters built into it.
I learned about the antivirus programs Solo from www.srnmicro.com and NOD32 from www.nod32.com.au/ from
users at this site. Some of these smaller companies seem to be offering some truly great products. Thanks again for letting us know.
