I believe my computer was infected with the bugbear virus. I have Trend Chip Away Virus on my computer, but it seems to be worthless. How can I remove Trend Chip Away and install a new anti-virus program like McAfee or Norton?

Trend Chip Away is your bios antivirus program? Rather poor choice of words, as many people think they have a virus when it pops up at startup. It protects your bios, and it does not need to be uninstalled to install a Norton or Macafee. Be sure to check out the prices for Norton 2002, as 2002 is dirt cheap($10), now that 2003 came out. For 98 there is no need for 2003. Take care and all the best!

First, what makes you think your computer was infected with the bugbear virus ?
If trend did not work... you might not have the virus !

There are trick E-mail's floating around that suggest you search your PC for certain files and delete them. These files turn out to be genuine Microsoft files... One of the is something like....
JDEBUG??? and it is a teddy bear icon !

The Bugbear virus disbles antivirus programs, similar to the Klez virus. Got here: http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/ and download Mcafee's removal tool. If you have the virus it will remove it along with several others. This is not a full antivirus program. Did you mean that you have Trend Micro's antivirus program?
Good luck
