Your PC will constantly be communicating with your ISP to a point and each webpage you visit will have to download and some update in real time.

Providing you are using a good up to date known AV & firewall then you should be reasonably secure.

I do however recommend you install SpywareBlaster available here:

http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

this application will help stop adware & spyware installing itself on your system in the first place.

Should you be unfortunate enough to get adware or spyware use AdAware SE Personal & Spybot Search & Destroy available freely here:

http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/

and

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/protect/default.mspx

Like your property if someone really wants it they WILL take it all you can do is protect yourself as best you can, keeping your PC adware & spyware free will certainly help protect you from the devil within.

I already have spybot, but thanks anyway. Your help has been much appreciated. The thing I’m worried about is my connection icon in the bottom right taskbar. It continues to flash (receive bytes) when I’m not downloading anything. What am I receiving or is this just normal and suppose to happen?

I think it's normal if you're on broadband which means that certain processes routinely communicate with the net to ensure that your connection is intact. You can also open Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del) and look at which processes is doing what. FYI: Some processes like Svchost and Internet Explorer does this.

Better yet, visit Karen's Kenworthy website for LAN Monitor. This utility will enable you to see real-time traffic statistics, including bytes sent and received, transmission errors, and network connection load factors, and more.

If you have an HP printer, Kodak Picture Camera or SpyAdware, Virus protection etc. Alot of these programs are constantly checking for updates, hence the Lan activity. As far as the HP, Kodak, etc hardware items go, I would shut the update checkers off. They are basically using up your resources. If these items are all working OK, you really don't need the updates anyways.
