Boot up and system restore

Specs: Windows XP
My emachines M6807 is infected with a debilitating virus and will not boot up. The welcome screen appears briefly after log on but then disappears and is replaced with the log on screen again in an ongoing cycle. Internet access, safe mode and system restore are all blocked. I have the restore CD that I can run as a last resort but would like to avoid that option if possible.

Sounds like a nasty Root Kit infection. But, I'm not totally sure. It wouldn't hurt to try the recovery option, because most likely it screwed with some of the boot files/MBR. Again, if you're locked out of the Admin account, Safe Mode, and etc, it can't hurt to try.

Not sure what you mean by recovery option. Windows recovery? Emachines does not have a widows recovery disk only a complete system restore disk. I do have a dedicated windows disk but it is XP service pack 1 so, if I am to do that, then I 'll do the complete format and restore procedure. I am looking for a possible fix to avoid that undertaking. Thanks.
