Subject: Boot Sector Virus?OS: N/ACPU/Ram: N/A |
Comment: Hi, I'm having a horrible problem. My computer has been slowly dying over the past few weeks. I started using windows XP professional edition, one day I accessed a website that was full of viruses, next thing I know I can't even login to windows, I got to the background, but no start menu, no icons etc. Using Ctrl+alt+del I could access my programs, but soon they started freezing my computer and crashing it. I decided to just wipe the hard drive using my windows 98 boot disk, with my intent to install 98, then upgrade back to XP. But during the installation, a window appears saying: Boot Sector Write ! Virus: continue y/n ? The computer freezes there. So I did some research and now this appears to be a boot sector virus. I have no operating system on my computer, since 98 can't install. Please help me! Anything would be most appreciated. Thank You, -Baazar

Reply: (edit)I had the same prob, although it was from a complete install, not a 98 up-grade Try this, just Boot from the XP CD and do a complete format, and a complete install, it worked for me Hope this helps The world is full of willing people, some are willing to work, others are willing to let them; just a thought!

Reply: (edit)Hey Demonking, thanks for helping. Unfortanetly my issue is not that simple, I have the upgrade version of Windows XP, not the full, so doing that is not possible for me, hence using the 98 disk, and then upgrading. Any other ideas?

Reply: (edit)Frisk offers a free program to get rid of your boot sector virus. Be sure to write or print the instructions on how to use the floppy. Go to this website and download the program and then install it on a floppy. http://www.f-prot.com/products/corporate_users/dos/

Reply: (edit)Yay! I did the easy thing and disabled the write protect in my BIOS, now everything seems to be working, but is there still a virus, or was it a false alarm? Either way I should probably install f-prot right? Thank you everyone!

Reply: (edit)Ug, So now I'm back in windows XP. Attempting to reinstall all my old drivers. First thing I did was install F-Prot, which informs me that it did not detect any viruses. So...everything should be okay right? Not a chance. After installing the drivers for my wireless pci networking card and opening internet explorer, it crashes windows and freezes it, upon restart the drivers no longer work until I reinstall them, then when trying to access my nvidia graphics drivers, windows freezes and crashes. So I updated to service pack 1, which doesnt help, and now service pack 2 is telling me that my CD key is wrong for windows, (which its not.) So... After a complete system wipe and virus scan....what is going on? Anyone help is most appreciated!

Reply: (edit)As to the upgrade cd, you can boot from it for a clean install. In the install sequence you will be asked to insert the win98 disk to verify the upgrade.

Reply: (edit)Absolutely,,,,do a clean install of XP with the XP CD, maybe repartition first then format and install XP, just use the 98 CD to prove the qualifying older version.
