Comment:

I believe I may have a boot sector virus.

Symptoms are computer screen froze no reaction from Ctrl/Alt/Delete. Comupter had to be switched off and will not reboot.

On reboot virus software (McAfee VirusScan Professional 6.0) shows - Checking memory for viruses - OK.

Visuscan then begins scanning C:\*.* but on reaching Pass 16 it freezes. It used to run to Pass 21 before rebooting fully.

I have tried running W98 Startup disc and this runs OK to the A:\> prompt.

I have then tried running emergency scan boot disk (EMDATS.ZIP)as per instruction on McAfee web site. On typing command bootscan /adl /clean / all all I get is "bad command".

I have also tried command FDISK/MBR which again runs to A;\> prompt but computer will still only reboot to Pass 16.

Can anyone help please?

Many thank.

David

Go to the http://www.f-prot.com/index2.html and get F-prot for windows/dos(free). Download it onto a floppy and run it at startup and it will scan and repair your virus. Make sure you read the instructions and write down the DOS command prompts that are needed to use the program. All the best!
