I seem to have a Blaster-like worm on the refurbished computer I just bought. It has all the symptoms-- RPC restart message, and the other one about General Services for Win32. I have run McAfee and the Symantec Blaster removal tool, with System Restore off and most of my processes ended. Both said my computer was fine, as did Ad-Aware.

I went in and disabled the RPC restart setting after failure. I don't have a HijackThis log at the moment, but I do remember off hand that these were running:

ps2.exe (starts automatically from system32)
ipfsx.exe (not sure if I got the name right)
run32.dll (followed by some additional coding with 'initialize daemon')
svchost.exe (four entries)

I know that's not much to go on. Hope to post a HijackThis log tomorrow. Any help in the meantime is GREATLY APPRECIATED!!! Thanks!

Hello Bsch,
Try this program very easy to use for people without any particular knowledge about the trojan's betrayal: Trojan Remover:
http://www.simplysup.com/tremover/details.html
Read carefully the "helpme" file in order to use correctly the two separate scan of the program.
Excellent program freeware for one month, shareware after, but ready to use and fully updated.
Good luck

While you wait for help, make sure you have Windows XP's default firewall enabled to block the RPC requests from the Internet that crash the system. Then up date XP at the Windows Update site and get all the security updates.
