First unplug from the Internet. If you have MSBLASTER and have tried to remove it, as soon as you get hit with a RPC packet from an infected machine, Windows XP will shutdown.

Unplug from Internet and NETWORK connections.

Boot and and use Ctrl-Alt-Del to get to Task Manager - Process tab and kill the MSBLAST process.

Then run MSCONFIG and in Startup uncheck MSBLAST entry.

Do a search for and delete any MSBLAST.* files, should be two.

Enable your XP FireWall. MSBLASTER may be turning it off. Control Panel, Networking and Internet Connections, select your network connection, right click connection, select Properties, Advance Tab and check Protect computer.

Reboot. You should now be able to boot and stay online long enough to download. If not:

Go to another machine if possible (Windows ME works well) and download the update Q823980 and install. It is 1.3Mb and will fit on a diskette.

I can't even get into a Windows screen. It asks if I want to go into Safe Mode but just restarts again if I select it. Is there a way to fix it from outside Windows?
