Never heard of blank.com

Best free antivirus in my opinion is Comodo. It uses much less RAM than any other AV, and scans are relatively quick even if scan everything.

Something else that has nothing to do with my earlier question ... can I empty my ".temp" folder or will that cause problems?
I don't know what this blank.com thing is ... all I know is that it suddenly became my 'home' page and I'm sure it is a virus etc.
Take care

✔ Best Answer
Here are the first 2 steps, there will be more after I look at the logs.
Will deal with the temp files later.

Run in this order.

Step 1: Run AdwCleaner

Tutorial
http://general-changelog-team.fr/en...
Close all open programs and internet browsers.
Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
Click on Clean.
Confirm each time with Ok.
Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
Please Copy & Paste the contents of that logfile with your next answer.
You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.

Step 2: Run Junkware Removal Tool
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Securi...
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/dow...
http://thisisudax.blogspot.com.au/2...
Download Junkware Removal Tool onto your Desktop. If your default download location is not the Desktop, drag it out of it's location onto the Desktop.
Warning! Once the scan is complete JRT will shut down your browser with NO warning.
Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
Temporarily disable your antivirus and any antispyware real time protection before performing a scan.
Click this link to see a list of security programs that should be disabled and how to disable them.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/for...
http://www.techsupportforum.com/for...
Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7/8, right-click JRT and select Run as Administrator.
The tool will open and start scanning your system.
Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved onto your Desktop and will automatically open.
Copy and Paste the contents of the JRT.txt log please.

"Question 1 -- are either of these programs available on download.com?"
WARNING: CNET Download.com downloads now come bundled with opt-out crapware and toolbars ( Same applies to Softonic )
http://www.groovypost.com/unplugged...

"Question 2 -- will this 'junkware removal tool' take away any of my programs/etc? Will I lose anything that's on my laptop?"
Only what is infected.

Keep in mind that once you are infected, it is too late for any anti-virus to help you, special programs are needed.

Also, during that process of removing infections, anything can happen, it is an absolute basic & your responsibility to make sure you always have your important stuff backed up.

I've used download.com for years ... is there a better download site that you could recommend?
If I am infected, what special programs are needed or what should I do? You make it sound really bad.
You recommended this junkware removal tool ... how will it change my system?
Take care

What is your current anti-virus program? I recommend Bitdefender Free Edition:

http://www.bitdefender.com/solution...

Regardless of your AV program, you should install & run the following:

CCleaner-Slim - https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/b...

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware - http://filehippo.com/download_malwa...

The programs that Johnw uses are safe. They rarely remove anything that you want unless it is a dubious program. They won't wreck the system if that's what you are thinking.

You have a "redirect" and either have to live with the situation or do something. Things could easily get worse, it depends what is on your computer, which is what Johnw is trying to find out, although those programs will find and fix issues too.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

You said I have a 'redirect'. What does that mean?

Your browser is being redirected to blank.com instead of your homepage, probably due to an infection.

You can delete what is in your temp folder (but not the temp folder itself) but that is only likely to help before an infection takes hold. It might not let you delete everything.

EDIT:
Johnw is particularly experienced at computer clean ups and has done all this many times before on here.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

I could recommend a few things that might help but johnw will be able to do a more thorough job of it. If you want more proof, just look at many of the posts in this section for anything solved that has between 50 and 120 answers and you will surely see Johnw at work helping someone. Just be patient and follow his steps carefully and you will be in good shape. He is one you can trust, just don't jump ahead or skip anything. If you move your pointer over his name you will see that he is rated as #9 on his experience rating, then look at the number assigned to you.... It takes a lot of helping other people to get anywhere below 100.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
