Black Screen

Specs: Windows Vista Home Premium, 64 bit
I have a Toshiba Satellite P305D, which was working fairly well until a few days ago. It was running extremely slow and sluggish, so I restarted the laptop hoping it would fix the problem.

However, it seems to have made things worse. When I hit the power button, the normal Toshiba start up icon shows up, and it instantly goes to a black screen with a white cursor. Shortly after the cursor turns into to half squares on top of each other, cursor gone. Hitting ctrl, alt, delete instantly shuts the entire system off and nothing seems to work.

Is this a virus and I'm just SOL? I went and bought a new, cheap laptop today, but would like to know if the Toshiba has a chance

what happens if you tap f8 on bootup and then choosing safe mode?
Also, there should be an option for 'Repair My Computer'
Try that too.
